My mum and my daughter will be flying in from England on the 2nd and 3rd July and I'd like to go somewhere out of town to see how Americans celebrate the 4th of July (which is also our wedding anniversary!).

My mum hasn't been here for the 4th July and we've been to the local Millburn High School a few times to see the fireworks. Everyone we know in our neighbourhood will be away for the long weekend and it won't be much fun having a barbie on our own....so I'm thinking of perhaps going to one of the seaside towns on the Shore for the day.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to where we could find a lot of amusements (eg. local bands, vendors etc.) and see a really good firework display?

I can just imagine what the traffic will be like though....!

If you decide not to drive so far, the Maplewood 4th of July celebration has a "good old fashioned 4th" flavor and is well-loved by many. Fireworks are loved or hated depending on whose opinion you seek. There is a circus (also alternatively loved and hated, I think it mostly depends on whether or not you are into circuses.) All kinds of contests, from running races, to a pet show to a baking contest and more are open only to Maplewood residents as contestants but others can enjoy being spectators. There is an admission charge to purchase a tag, which is enforced for the circus and to enter the main viewing area for the fireworks. Tags will be on sale all around town soon, I'm sure, and also at the events that day. It all takes place in and around Memorial Park.

Miss L Toe,

Absolutely stay in Maplewood for the July 4th celebration!

Tickets are available in many stores - look for a poster in the window. Off the top of my head: Richard Roberts, Abode, The stationary store, Village Wine, Burgdorff's, and Net Nomads all have tickets.

The kid's parade in the morning is the cutest thing you'll ever see, the foot races are fun, pretty sure non-residents can run in them as long as they have a tag, the pet contest is adorable too, kids enter everything from hermit crabs to the family dog and everyone gets a prize. Baking contest is really neat, everyone gets at least an honorable mention - just make sure you drop off your entry before 9:00 am at Maplewood Town Hall.

In the afternoon there's an interactive art project, music, a circus, and of course, fireworks in the evening.

Tickets cost $8.00 for the entire day - best deal in town.

One caveat - I'm a volunteer for the July 4th festivities, so my enthusiasm is biased, but I became a volunteer because I had so much fun with my family over the years.

If you decide you want tix, I'll make it extra easy for you - just PL me and I'll drop them off at your house!

Red Bank has a great fireworks display on July 3rd. It's a nice place to visit regardless of the day...

Point Pleasant isn't that far, it's true Jersey Shore honkey tonk, has a boardwalk with all the typical vendors and a little amusement park for the kiddies. And I'm sure it'll be well and truly packed to the gills with revelers. According to www.pointpleasantbeach.com, there will be fireworks at 9:00 P.M. on Jenkinson's beach, which is smack in the middle of everything you'd want to see.

A restaurant we always enjoyed for seafood is the Lobster Shanty. You can eat inside in the A/C or outside on the deck. Inside there waiters, outside you order and wait for them to call your number.

Oh yeah, I forgot, there's also a cute little "Aquarium" there.
