-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know a few businesses that try to have live music in our village and they keep getting noise complaints. For instance, the police kept having to come by Here's to the Arts saturday night. They don't do anything, because I guess they are allowed to have music until 10pm, but the police are obligated to come by. Seems like a waste of police manpower to me. From some posts I've read on MOL, we would be better served if they were patrolling the parking lot of Verjus rather than making an appearance at downtown music venues. They'd probably prefer to handle real issues. I had heard that the pub had to curtail their live music as well. If you choose to live downtown, should you not expect to deal with downtown noise? And with a community so arts based, isnt it kind of cool that we have some sort of night life in our town. Seems like most people around here moved here from the city anyway. What do you think?

Don't most people who live 'downtown' on Maplewood Ave at least, live above one of the stores? Some of it you might be able to blame on the people who rent out the apartments above the stores. I know of one family who moved to Maplewood from across the country. They had to rent something quickly and for some reason I'm not sure of, ended up renting an apartment above the Gate. When they were complaining about the noise on the weekends I asked them "what did they expect, it's above a pub!" They were told it was quiet and didn't know it was above the Gate until it was too late. They ended up staying in a hotel every weekend until they could figure out what to do. They ended up relocating to Florida. People who choose to live near the town center complaining about the noise from downtown are as bad as people who choose to live near the train station, an airport or a school complaining about the trains, plane or children at the schools making noise. |

I believe that Art communicates to 'his neighbors' when HTTA will be holding outdoor music events. At least they're made aware of noise before it happens. |

I think a lively downtown adds to the ambiance of the town. And Art DID notify his neighbors and I think he actually extended free admission to the concert to them. That did not seem to alleviate the noise complaints, though. The police were there at least 2 times that I know of. The goal of some of these people is to cause so much trouble for these businesses that they then have problems renewing their licenses. |

Well, if the Maplewood ordinance states 10 PM, and it's 11 PM and the music is still playing, don't the residents have a right to quiet enjoyment? As long as the business is operating within the law, what complaints could anyone have, from either side? And, if a business gets special authorization from the township to hold an outdoor event, and is allowed to go beyond the 10 PM deadline in the ordinance, then any complaints should be directed towards the township, and not the business. I believe that the downtown area is considered mixed use, both residential and commercial. That doesn't mean, of course, that commercial trumps residential, or that residential trumps commercial. And there are a lot of benefits in living in this area - convenience to train transportaion and proximity to shopping are prime examples. But there are the inconveniences of constant traffic, delivery trucks, impassable sidewalks, garbage pickup, etc. Having residents there certainly adds to the life of that area. Without them, it might as well be a strip mall. |

I was a resident in the village for several years and that was before the pub. It is downtown and one needs to realize that there is good and bad to that. You can walk to the train, postoffice, shopping, movies, restaurant, bars, nail stores, movie rentals, icecream stores and then some...what did you think...none of that creates noise? If you movie above a pub (didn't they look at the place before they rented it??) you can't expect that the 80 or so people who are enjoying themselves are going to wisper now so the two (or three) of you can have a silent neighborhood when it's convenient for you. I grew up in a hotel in a tourism town in Austria and I never even noticed the noise (alot louder then Maplewood) because it's part of the place. If you want a quiet home you can't move in the middle of downtown..It doesn't take superbrainpower to figure that out. |

The band was done playing by 10 pm. They even cut 2 songs out of the set in order to be done by then. The police came 2 times BEFORE 10 pm with the noise complaints!callista |

The cops were doing their jobs. The law states 10pm. It wasn't 10pm yet. The people calling the cops need to chill, groove with the tunes.

If someone called the MPD before 10, then they should be ignored. I think the MPD should tell them that the noise ordinance doesn't kick in until 10 PM and they can't do anything until then. Party On!

"From some posts I've read on MOL, we would be better served if they were patrolling the parking lot of Verjus rather than making an appearance at downtown music venues." Callista, I know you were trying to make a point, but there is no need to slam Ver Jus in this. I think that is simply unfair of you to single out one particular business on one particular street, with all the overtones and undertones that come with your post (whether you meant them or not). There is a good deal of history on MOL that is attached to your off-hand comment, some of it very hurtful, and I am not sure if you are aware of this or not. |

The band did indeed end by 10 PM. The person who continues to complain even did so during our sound check at 4PM. They called again in the middle of the show at about 9PM and again while we were packing up. Even when Art is having live music INDOORS they seem to find a reason to complain. Some people are just selfish and mean spirited and will likely never change. The police do still have to respond to a complaint, regardless of the time. They were wonderful and even hung out and listened for a bit that night. What Art is doing is trying to bring quality live music to the center of our town. If that process gets derailed by one person, we are all to blame for letting it happen. |
