If you like Chicago Blues, then you should plan to be at this show! The great bluesman Bobby Radcliff will be playing at Art's on Saturday night, July 15. This guy is a master and a real treat to have here. Let's show him that Maplewood appreciates live music and loves the blues.

Here are some short reviews of Booby:

SPEAKING OF BOBBY RADCLIFF
"Busting out of left field is one of the hottest blues stylists on the current scene. Able to change sound with a single bound, this super-guitarist stands out from the pack."
Robert Gordon in "Option" magazine

"Bobby Radcliff is one of the greatest guitar players alive."
Jamie Dell Apa of The Baltimore Blues Society

"Bobby's a fine vocalist as well, and a force to be reckoned with any way you look at it."
Ruth Brown on National Public Radio's "Blues Stage"

"His music is drenched in the primal emotions of pain and anger, not only because of his screaming guitar but equally because of the naturally gloomy timbre of his voice, which enables him to wrench feeling out of lyrics without resorting to the contortions that pass for singing among too many of his peers."
Steve Hoffman for WDCU-FM, Washington, DC

"An enigmatic personality, this Washington, DC native is a tough one to pin down. Just when you think you've got his "West Side" pocket figured out, he drops Hank Ballard's "Twist" on you and makes it work like a whole new groove."
Dave Hussong for "Vintage Guitar" magazine

"Bobby Radcliff just may be the greatest blues guitarist to ever come out of New York City."
Kevin Roe in "Sound Views" magazine

"...one of the most volitile and distinctive blues guitarists working today. Actually, 'blues' may be too confining a label to describe Radcliff's music."
Mike Joyce for The Washington Post

"Radcliff is perhaps the angriest blues guitarist in the East. The New Yorker's axe phrasing is constricted, even paranoid. At times his crammed, busy notes and screamingly nervous tone are nearly frightening."
The Boston Phoenix

"Wow! I doesn't get any hotter than that!"
John Hammond, Jr.

Condolances to all poor bereft souls who could not come down to hear Bobby rippin' live last night.
Fan-freakin'-tastic. A special world-class treat anywhere but especially in such a small club filled with home-town friends drinkin' beers, (not "gasoline blownin' myself all up in steam";)

Thanks Jerry, Terry, Al and Art and especially thanks to Bobby! - Hope you'll come back soon to appreciative Maplewood!

-Wayne

Steel, ...Maplewood is so hot! There must have been a dozen things going on this weekend. Art, sorry we missed this one pal. Last night we went to a fundraiser at Mem's house for a good cause, so yes, please bring him back soon to an appreciative town.

Thanks to all of you who came last night and thanks for your very warm welcome to a treasure of a musician, Bobby Radcliff. If you were there last night, you know how special he is. He made an interesting comment last eve about how the live music scene in NYC has all but disappeared and since he lives there now, it has become increasingly difficult for him to make a living and practice his art (he is also a wonderful painter by the way). The fact that Maplewood has increasingly become a home for music and art of all kinds is amazing. I have lived here my whole life and have been a drummer since I was 12. Except perhaps for the days when there were bands playing in the tennis court at Dehart park, I don't think that there has ever been a better time for me to live here. Bobby was so thrilled by the response he got last night and wants very much to come back. It was sooo cool to watch him signing autographs between sets and at the end of the night.

We're already talking about doing it again in September, maybe even sharing sets between Al Gold and Bobby Radcliff. What a great combination.

I can't begin to tell you how much fun I had playing and I know Terry Hemmer (bass) felt the same way. We didn't get in much rehersal with Bobby but it was so easy to just follow, sit back and play a groove and let him do his thing.

Bobby's web site is www.bobbyradcliff.com
You can read his biography, listen to samples of his music and buy his CDs.

Thanks to Art for just being there and helping to make this happen. The pulled pork was wonderful by the way. Keep putting QUALITY music like Bobby on that stage and your success will grow.

Great show, Jerry! I really enjoyed it. Bobby was amazing and you and Terry weren't too shabby either. ;) Bring him back in September and I'll bring out a crowd myself.

Ken

P.S. I love how he signed the disk for my son, the aspiring guitarist: "Remember, the guitar is your friend"

Thanks, Kap. Bobby really is special..as a player and as a person. I was really happy to have gotten to spend time with him. I KNOW that he wants to come back so we will make it happen.
We recorded that whole show and some of it sounds great!

Were you around for the tunes that Al Gold did? If so, what did you think.

Yo! You drum whore you! Easy...You know you started it.

Sounded great! He is a great player. AND you and Terry were right in the POCKET were you were supposed to be to allow him to shine, coasting effortlessly between rythmn and lead...like there were multiple guitarists. His vocals were also better than the recording available on itunes.

Having the opportunity to hear you in multiple settings...you are without a doubt, the musician's musician. Doesn't matter the genre...you are always exactly where you are supposed to be...with or without hat.

to a fellow music whore: thanks. your comments mean a lot to me. That is and has always been my approach to playing...lay down a groove...provide the rest of the band with a pocket so deep they can all fit into it and get out of the way of the star!

I am by the way, very pleased to know that my funk is not totally dependant upon the hat. I was getting nervous about that. Hope that isn't just a clever ploy to get the hat away from me!

We really ought to work together someday.
