Is this the best rapper ever thread? It's turning into the best One Hit Rap. My vote for that is Lucas with the lid off. I posted the video on some thread; that's also awesome. J.B. |

Also great rap is Pharcyde. "She keeps on passing me by" is actually melodic, so I guess it's technically not rap. But come on, it's rap. Good social commentary was also, "Gangster's Paradise." By Coolio. I swear, I've gotten teary listening to it. I know, I'm no gangsta. J.B. |

Pretty much impossible to definitively state who the G.O.A.T. is in the rap game. Not unless specific criteria was laid out, anyway. Are we talking most clever in his/her use of rhyme scheme (my favorite rap line of all time: "Like He-Man I've got the power, I like my chicken from the Chinaman but make it sweet and sour" by US3), or most profound lyrically (which probably leaves out the majority of rappers out there and narrows the list down just to those with social commentary to make (has "It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how I keep from going under" ever been topped?), or most hypnotic voice (Biggie, Tupac, Snoop), or employer of catchiest beats? Since I couldn't select a single artist even if the criteria was made more specific, I'll toss a couple names on pile simply because I don't believe they have been mentioned yet, and because each of them could hold their own against anybody. Digital Underground, Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes, Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, Heavy D, and even though they didn't possess the stamina necessary to be a serious G.O.A.T. contender, let us not forget the contributions of Black Sheep. |

Roy, Very thoughtful post. That's the kind of discussion I was originally looking for. Plus I wanted to (and have) learned some new names. I haven't mentioned any from the Jazz Rap period of th '90's althought it is some of my favorite music because the rap was usually subpar. (Us3 is a great example of clever music with weak rap.) I know it's hard to pick the G.O.A.T. They have to compete in all of the components you mention. I've recently downloaded L.L. Cool J's Greatest hits, and I have to say, listening to them back to back, I'm begining to think he may be able to bump Run-DMC's postion on top. Little or no socially redeeming value though. Buzzsaw, I love that you know Dr. Octagon. J.B. |

I don't think anyone mentioned The Streets yet. Maybe not the "best" per se, but certainly one hilarious mofo. |

I like KRS-ONE for his lyrics ( I see U.S.A for AFRICA???) J.B I have cried to gangsta's paradise too ( But I am still bad B**** though... LOL) Of course I have to give props to my man, Clef. Wyclef is my hero. He has done so much good besides the music ( and he host some good parties as well...) Eminem is sexy and I like the way he is using the media. He does not curse, when you talk to him IRL. He is very quiet and actually pretty cool, now that you wouldn't expect of him ;-) So many good rapper's out there...
