Syd passed away today.
People sometimes forget he started The Pink Floyd.

They were playing Lucifer Sam on WFMU so I listened, then the DJ came on and said he died on the 7th. Hope he finds peace hereafter.

Syd Barrett wrote the best Pink Floyd song ever: "See Emily Play"

Shine on, indeed.

The best obit:

Quote:

Syd Barrett died last Friday, although the news was not announced until this morning. In later years he had apparently passed his time painting pictures, or working in his garden. It might have been a sad life; it might even have been a happy one. Personally, I'm rather glad that we don't know, and that he never came out to tell us. Barrett went away and stayed away. He took his secrets to the grave.

I think that's the interesting thing about Barrett's legacy...he never tried to come back. No matter how big Pink Floyd became, no matter how tempting it might have been to even try to come back during the heydays around Dark Side or The Wall, or to reappear in the late 80's when Waters and the band split, he never toured with Ringo--he just stayed away. A few early solo albums and then -- nothing.

It seems that most people, after spending time in the spotlight, itch to get back. Salinger comes to mind as someone who also stayed away -- is Salinger still alive? If he is he must be in his 90's by now...<checking...>, he's 87, assuming he's still out there.

TomD,

I think he had to completely sever his rock star life in order to maintain some semblence of sanity.

The Oracle (a big fan) just emailed me, expressing (a) how mixed his own emotions are that Mr. Barrett is finally gone, and encouraging us all to remember that (2) Syd's just left this plane of existence to accept that great gig in the sky, where he'll be jamming with Jimi, Keith, et al...

-s.

BTW, Dave23, I can totally relate: I severed myself from my own rock star life in order to maintain some semblance of sanity. Too bad it didn't work.
