Wow, heard her live last night in a surprise appearance at Birdland.

Still sings with great power!

Can anyone help me put some pieces together?

I had her confused with another singer who I think died in the last few years but I can't remember her name! So was I surprised when Phoebe got up to sing last night!!!!

Many thanks to anyone who can help me remember the now dead female singer of similar skills.

Best Regards,
Ron Carter

I believe yesterday was her birthday...WFUV played a half hour set during lunch.

(sorry, can't answer your question!)

Minnie Ripperton died way more than a few years ago - 1979 or '80, I think

Ron,

Are you thinking maybe Etta James (still alive) or KoKo Taylor (equally still alive)?

I saw Phoebe a few times with Donald Fagen at his Rock and Soul Revues before he "re-formed" Steely Dan with Walter Becker...she can really sing, but at times, she can really over-sing.

I also love Joan Armatrading, who has some similarities -- I hope it's not she who died.

LI1,

You got it!

Minnie Ripperton.

The memory is a funny thing I turned 1979 into 1997!!!!

Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Yes, she sang as part of another Birthday Celebration last night:

Lucie Arnaz also shares July 17 as Birthday.

Thanks to all, you can count on MOL to help set almost anything straight!!

Let's give a go at Middle East Peace next!

Best Regards,
Ron Carter

rcarter,

You can catch Minnie Ripperton’s daughter Maya Rudolph on SNL. She’s very funny!

Julia Fordham does a great rendition of "Loving You" as well as a tribute song to Minnie and Maya.

Shevya,

Nell Carter died from heart disease complicated by diabetes and obesity in 2003. She is survived by her two adopted sons (Joshua and Daniel) and a daughter (Tracy), conceived during her rape, as well as by her partner Ann Kaser.
