I need to spruce up my collection. I'm a fan of Sarah, Carmen, Ella, Astrud, Patti (Tuck and...), Betty, Paula Morelenbaum, Jane Monheit, Diana Krall...you get the idea.

Favorite CDs from them or others?

You might want to check out Eva Cassidy

Cassandra Wilson-"Blue Moon Daughter" Madeleine Peyroux - "Careless Love" I swear I thought it was Billie Holiday the first time I heard her. You can catch one of her songs in the Gap commercial . It's the one in San Francisco "Don't Wait To Long" Nancy Wilson, Billie Holiday....

Try out Kate McGarry.

LOS ANGELES TIMES
”Songbird can’t be pigeonholed. Amid a wave of skilled vocalists Kate McGarry eschews clichés and shows keen imagination..”

THE NEW YORK TIMES
"Applying a Jazz Sensibility to Bjork and Joni Mitchell."

TIME OUT NEW YORK
"Judging by the spirited but straight cover of Joni Mitchell's "Chelsea Morning" that opens Kate McGarry's Mercy Streets you may wonder what all the healthy buzz on her is about. But stick with the album. As Ms. McGarry brazenly flirts with guitarist Keith Ganz on "Whatever Lola Wants" it becomes clear that she's got new designs on the standards. By the time Bjork's "Joga" hits with a headlong woosh you'll be ready to follow her wherever she leads."

PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
"Think Eva Cassidy reborn."

Sbenny...you are sooooo bad!

...also, I have to co-sign on Rachelle Ferrell's voice ....she is phenomenal! I saw her and Dianne Reeves at the Newport Jazz Fest years back and those sistahs are not only great jazz singers but as Nancy Wilson puts it "they are song stylists"!

My posts are gone, too! I recommended Holly Cole and was interested by the idea that Kate McGarry covered Peter Gabriel as well as Bjork...

It happened because I was thinking about it and when I looked for the original thread it had already been archived so I just pasted your original question into a new post and started it over again :-)

I'd also recommend Myra Taylor (40's Mercury with Jimmy Keith's Orchestra) and a song in particular called 'Still Blue Water'

Good stuff
