Hi, joined Netflix & love it. I am looking for some recommendations for any favorite British programs, especially mystery shows. Can be series shows or one-time programs. I have already seen and loved: Midsomer Murder Mysteries, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Coupling, Cold Feet. Thanks for any recos! |

"Inspector Morse" - Wonderful murder mysteries...based in Oxford and the surrounding countryside. Makes me feel homesick for England. (I have the complete set which I bought on amazon.co.uk and play on my 'hacked' DVD player which plays DVDs from anywhere in the world. (There are about 32 DVDs in the set). "Prime Suspect" - crime/murder series - stars Helen Mirren as Inspector Jane Tennison. Quite a number of series (at least 5) were made. Excellent. "Cracker" - more crime/murder - starring Robbie Coltrane - not sure if available in the US *Really* off the wall British Comedy: "The League of Gentlemen" (I like series one the best) "Little Britain" and "Spaced" - with the same actors from the zombie comedy movie "Shaun of the Dead". My mum has just brought over "Phoenix Nights" comedy series one and two which I'm trying to get into although some fellow expats rave about it. |

The whole "Richard Sharpe" series, Sharpe's Eagle, Sharpe's Regiment, et al., with Sean Bean and a fine repertory company of actors depict English army infantry life during the Napoleonic wars. Seen frequently on BBC America channel. |

I loved "Lovejoy," which starred Ian McKellan as a charming, slightly bent antiques dealer. I'm a fan of "Eastenders," the soap about life among the working class denizens of Albert Square. I've been following it almost since it started airing in the U.S.--twenty years? And I also loved the series about the detective on the isle of Jersey. I forget the name. Wait. It was "Bergerac." And the series that just aired on HBO--"Extras," about movie extras--very funny. I also loved the HBO series "Rome." Fantastic production, wonderful Briish cast. I wonder why drams set in ancient Rome demand aBritish accent--but they do. And I also loved "Prime Suspect." |

Cadfail (spelling?) is available from Netflix. I think Allo, Allo is also there. Not a mystery but great. |

A few favorites: MI:5 (released as "Spooks" in the UK) - brilliant, fast-paced, tightly-plotted (complex!) stories of a team of agents working for government security agency MI:5. All the tension of "24", but a lot more realistic. HUSTLE - charming comedy/drama about a team of upscale con-artists that target the overly greedy. Currently showing on AMC as well. Unusual narrative methods (lots of breaking the fourth wall). Smart, sexy, fun. Not sure if this is out on DVD here yet. GOOD NEIGHBORS ("The Good Life" in the UK) - aggressively cute 70s comedy about a suburban couple that decides to become self-sufficient in their upper middle class neighborhood (raising animals in their backyard, growing crops where their lawn used to be). This was a favorite of the Queen, and the boxset includes a special Royal Command Performance. DOCTOR WHO, SERIES ONE (2005 version) - relaunch of the sci-fi classic, tailored for a modern-day audience. Last of an alien race of time travellers explores (and defends) the universe, and is joined by a London teenager bored with her dead-end job. This was the surprise hit of last year for the BBC, winning BAFTAs and other awards (including Best Drama) left, right, and center. FAWLTY TOWERS - John Cleese. Essential. Flawless. |

One more: CHEF! - Hilarious comedy about a tempermental chef at an upscale French restaurant. Unfortunately, the creators seemed to go insane after two seasons and Series 3 shows a marked downturn in writing and production quality. Stick to the first two and pretend the last series never happened... |

Don't forget Father Ted! Also - one of my favorite TV mystery series is 'A Touch of Frost' with David Jason. I believe Netflix has most, if not all of the series. |

Short of reading monsters enormous thread, not sure if anyone recommended "only Fools and Horses". This is a classic Brit comedy and even years later it still has me rolling around.

I second Inspector Morse and Footballer's Wives is my embarassing obsession (not a mystery, though). It's just so trashy. A few recent Netflix/BBC rentals that we really liked-- not all are mysteries: Foyle's War- there are lots of these The Forsyte Saga House of Cards The House of Elliott Middlemarch Loved Cracker, loved Prime Suspect

The best drama series (with a touch of mystery) produced by the Beeb....I, Claudius. Also, as previously mentioned, Cadfael. |

Glad someone mentioned I, Claudius. Best. TV. Ever. Cadfael, not so much. Ellis Peters was not happy with it, and I can see why. Check out The Young Ones. Revolutionized British TV comedy. |
