Good one about outsourcing jobs to India last night. My only problem is that it competes with South Park |

30 Days is possibly the only TV show that has moved me to tears and changed my local and world-view. The first episode (from last season) where Morgan and his partner moved to Ohio for 30 days and lived on minimum wage just knocked me out. The episode with the couple from Jersey City who moved to an eco-village in Missouri (Dancing Rabbit) really inspired me to consider what my family's ecological footprint is and reduce it. Beyond farmers' markets and buying locally, I've met do many farmers and now I buy only locally grown organic foods. At first I thought it would be a sacrifice, but I've met interesting farmers, found amazing raw-milk cheese makers, and we eat better and cheaper than before.

Virtual - Actually, I have to correct my prior posting - I buy mostly local food - I still (obviously) can't buy local coffee, or olives and oils from local sources. Anyhow - My new favorite most delish cheese is from a little family-business called "Farmstead Fresh, Inc" Here's the website: www.farmsteadfresh.com All the cheese is still made by their 80-year-old third generation cheese-maker. The milk is raw and only comes from grass-fed dairy cows - it's far and away superior to any cheese I've bought at a grocery store - plus they offer free shipping on orders over $100. While the cheese costs around $12 a pound, I've found the food is so good that we eat more slowly and we snack much less. Meals are just much more satisfying. There's a fantastic farmers' market in Lafayette, NJ every SUnday from 10:30 to 3:30 - about a 45-minute drive. The vendors are all local and promote small, family-run farming and preserving farmland, open-space, building community - all those good things. |
