trying to decide which class to sign up my daughter for - either the art exploration at the baird center or storybook art at the messy artist. the baird center is much much more affordable, but my daughter has never taken an art class there, and i dont know anyone who has. she has taken a class at the messy artist and liked it, but the basic class for her age is the same time as her pre-school - so i thought id try the storybook art (also dont know anyone who has taken that class - i think it is new) looking for recommendations or preferences to either baird center art exploration class or for messy artist. thanks |

mallory--try asking the Baird Center if your daughter can take a trial class to see if she likes it. I know some places allow you to do that; it may help you make your decision easier. |

My kids have taken quite a bit of art (and dance and sports and...) at Baird, always chosen for price and convenience. I thought it was all just fine, esp in the younger years when there's probably less difference between places (there's only so much a preschool art class can take on). I've heard raves about the other place, but I don't know the price difference, which would be a factor for me. |

Check out 1978Artscenter.org in Maplewood. Brenda Milne has a fabulous class for the younger age group called CURIOUS KIDS |

Mallory- This is Donna Bernstein, director of The Messy Artist. I saw your post and thought I would take the opportunity to tell you more about the Storybook Art class. It is a relatively new program that I started. This will be the third session we are offerring it. The class combines literacy, writing and art. Each week we read a book and then do project related to that story. Some of the stories we've done are "The Rainbow Fish", "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Where the Sidewalk Ends". The project either relates to the plot of the story or the style of illustrations from that book. Most weeks a writing component is added as well. I hope this is helpful. I you have further questions please call me at (973)378-2425.

My daughter took a few sessions of the Art Explorations class at Baird. The instructor Jane, is very nice and patient with the kids. Many of the parents leave, but my daughter has insisted I stay so I've seen everything that goes on. She has sort of let the kids skill level and attention span direct the class...and the last session she also based each project on a story. Not directly, but something in the story would inspire the project. For us, it's been perfect—the price is right, if we miss a class I don't stress the loss. It's a great opportunity for my daughter to try out different types of paints, clay, glues, etc. I am not concerned with the final project but the process. It has been very interesting to watch, to say the least. |
