Why? It's gonna be awful. It was funny to make fun of for awhile, but who would want to actually sit though it? |

I laughed in disbelief when I first heard about it, but it's been talked about for so long that I don't really feel like seeing it anymore. There really isn't much to say. Goofy title + zero plot + Sam Jackson + overexcited audience that's way too eager about being "in on the joke" even if it isn't particular funny to me (remember the "flash mob" craze?) = a bit much for me to take. I have an image of people cheering for the things that they think they're supposed to cheer for (e.g., when Jackson says his inevitable "mother#($*&ing snakes" line). The strength of the movie seems hinged on the experience of watching it with a vocal audience. That said, I will be watching out for reviews and may yet get around to renting it long after the hype has died down (which may not actually take that long). |

The funny thing about the flash mob craze was that none of the participants actually WERE in on the joke. There was a truly fantastic story in Harpers a few months ago written by the guy who started the whole flash mob thing as an experiment in hipster group-think. The whole thing was basically making fun of the idiots who so desperately wanted to be part of something "cool." |

Ha! Indeed. While the audience gets hyped by the "wackiness" of the whole thing, Sam Jackson and friends will be laughing all the way to the bank Sorry, I meant "the muthaf#$%in' bank"! |

Well here's my review: Snakes On A Plane: *** What a truly hysterical movie. I haven't laughed as hard since Team America World Police. |

Went to see it today and took the 10 year old. I know it is rated R but he had rejected the Barnyard movie and I've never been enthusiastic about the "cows with leadership skills" theme anyway. SOAP was the only movie he wanted to see, and he's seen all the alien movies without nightmares (which I could not) and it was raining. So it was off to an empty theatre at Essex Green. Sebenois is correct on this one (even if he missed the boat on Little Miss Sunshine). It’s entertaining and hysterical, even to a 10 year old's sensibility. As soon as we saw the Chihuahua peaking out of the handbag we had a bet made on its chance of survival with the snakes. I won, but my kid ate the candy bar anyway. Samuel Jackson gives a great performance and manages to keep a straight face in almost every scene. No doubt there were lots of outtakes. There were some scenes that were not appropriate for a 10 year old (even for those that don’t scare easily). Predictably, the first to go is the couple in the bathroom. I had to cover the kid’s eyes a few times. It is too bad they did not tone them down some and gotten a PG-13 because they missed out on a big potential audience.

Nan - I saw "Snakes" at Essex Green at the bargain show too - it was me and 3 other people. I think it's a movie that is better in a crowd. By the time Sam L. Jackson gave the line about "MFing snakes..etc" I (briefly) clapped and the deafening silence reminded me that I was watching a way dorky movie that I loved and it is best watched with a bunch of friends with a shared penchant for bad movies. I agree with you about the one scene that kids can't see re: the bathroom scene - sort of a shame.Besides that I'd take my 12-year-old, because it's very over-the-top and funny otherwise. |

Just curious, is this movie supposed to be funny? Seemed utterly idiotic to me. But I assumed it was some serious suspense thriller something or other. |

Exactly. It's a serious suspense thriller that is utterly idiotic. Might even make a good musical.
