I've been in denial for quite some time, but now that I'm older I can finally admit it: I hate avant garde jazz.

Almost everyone I know hates it, too.

Seems to me it's mostly a safe haven for guys without technique who can't play on changes. (with a few exceptions, of course)

The people who get the biggest kick out of it are in their mid-twenties.

Reject avant garde jazz

Your reaction.

Why does liking something in your 20s but not after that invalidate it? I listened to a lot of free jazz when I was younger and don't have much of a stomach for it anymore, but that hardly makes it worthless. Same goes for hardcore punk and hip-hop, both of which I have huge respect for and not much interest in listening to now that I'm older.

"I hate avant garde jazz" is supposed to come off innocuously, like "I hate broccoli."

I certainly don't "hate" any artists.

But I really don't want to listen to Cecil Taylor or Anthony Braxton at this stage of my life (although at least both those guys can play their instruments). I put all their LPs out at the curb for the recent bulk recycling day.

Interstellar Space wil be headed out the door pretty soon.

Beg to differ. I think your statement may be a bit broad. Though I am no real fan of avant garde jazz either, a guy like Paul Motian plays and composes pretty far out. I'd say he's not hiding one bit and sure has technique, no? Miles and Coltraine often crossed the line too but those guys could sure play through changes when they wanted to. Even in the modern classical world, composers like Charles Ives and Harry Parch were often unlistenable but they were making a creative and important musical statement. Did Jackson Pollock really have technique or could he just splash paint? On the other hand there are cats who play like crap and call it avant guarde. They should have their license to play revoked! Those who have developed technique and understand the roots of their art have every right to do as they please, however strange and disconcerting to the audience. Fortunately, we all the right to not listen or look if we don't want.

I never could enjoy avant garde jazz either but never questioned the ability of the musicians. I've seen Cecil Taylor live and he was amazing. I didn't enjoy the music but did enjoy the musicianship.

Maybe you just haven't found the good stuff yet, like Don Cherry's Mu or Coltrane's Om. Free jazz also brought in a lot of Asian and Middle Eastern influences that weren't part of jazz before.

I'm game. I'll give them a try. It was when the music became assaultive to my ears that I'd turn it off.

Heck, I love John Cage.

I had a hard time listening to Pat Metheny and Ornette Coleman on Song X. Still do, but every once in a while I go back to it to see if I've missed something. Metheny also put a 4 disc set of nonsense out a few years ago from the Knitting Factory...what crap!?

I saw Metheny play a guitar for about 30 minutes with a balloon at the knitting factory. Not the best show I ever saw.

Where does "a love supreme" fit in here?

Good question. A Love Supreme has to be considered avant-garde, sandwiched by a beautiful, haunting, sort of melody. Now that's listenable to me. What do you think?

Listening to some pretty "out" stuff right now on Pandora by, you won't believe it, Max Roach. Very cool

A wonderful version of "A Love Supreme" performed by Mahavishnu John Mcloughlin (sp?) and Carlos Santana. Worth a listen!

Why were you with a balloon?

A Love Supreme and Giant Steps are my favorite Coltrane albums.
