Garden State had a great soundtrack. I also like the music for K-Pax (Edward Shearmur), Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (Yann Tiersen), Kikujiro (Joe Hisaishi) and Tony Takitani (Ryuichi Sakamoto). Any other contemporary soundtracks that really help create a movie?

Just thought of the soundtrack for Crash, too. And Snow Falling on Cedars. Mark Isham, I think.

The Last Waltz

Soundtracks we own and have enjoyed...The Godfather, The Last Emporer, Local Hero, Bull Durham. I loved the soundtrack for Magnolia, not even because of the specific music and performer, but how it tied the movie together.

The Last Waltz goes without saying. I guess I'm thinking of movies where the music supports rather than is the focus.

And who can't forget the music for O Brother Where Art Thou. Maybe one of the best pairings of music with screenplay.

Dianne Reeves' smoking soundtrack for Good Night, And Good Luck. Sheer perfection from start to finish. Perfect for rainy days or winter evenings.

I also really enjoyed Hans Zimmer's and James Howard's collaboration for Batman Begins. A bit bombastic in places, but hey - it was a comic book movie! The odd/creepy thing was that the tracks weren't named after scenes in the movie, rather different species of bats. They were ordered in a way so that the first letters of the cues in the middle spelled out B-A-T-M-A-N. ;) The track "Molossus" (aka when Batman breaks out the Batmobile for the first time) never fails to pump me up. I have to be in the right mood for Hans Zimmer, but I always have time for the Gladiator soundtrack.

Magnolia is a thing of beauty, as is the lush score to Princess Mononoke.

Run Lola Run is fun to, well, run to!

I agree with Hank....Aimee Mann's soundtrack to "Magnolia" is one of my favorite soundtracks.

Another good one: Twin Peaks soundtrack.

OK, Ive given this more thought...and will exclude musicals or music-themed movies (The Last Waltz inclusion was sort of tongue in cheek, so I will skip Purple Rain, Stop Making Sense, Hard Day's Night, as well as Oklahoma, etc. although West Side Story needs to be included)...

Cinema Paradiso, Wizard of Oz, American Graffiti, Star Wars (although all the rest of John Williams' scores seem to sound like Ive heard them before), Goldfinger, Shaft!/Superfly, The Pink Panther, The Sting, Repo Man.

I'm a huge fan of Michael Nyman (does the soundtrack for most Peter Greenaway films) and is probably best known for The Piano soundtrack. But he actually did some other more Hollywood films like Ravenous, Carrington and Gattaca. He also did the incidental music for the Japanese version of the Iron Chef cooking show.

I also like the electronic musician/producer David Holmes who did the soundtrack for Ocean's 11 and 12, Out of Sight, Pi and Analyze That to name a few.

I agree that there are two types of soundtracks - the great collections of songs, and those that support the movie.

"Oh Brother" was a great collection of songs, but also supported the story.

"Local Hero" was mentioned above - that's a Mark Knopfler instrumental soundtrack, and it's terrific.

For orchestral soundtracks, "Star Wars" is good, but you can't beat "Patton".

"Finding Forrester" has some great music (Miles Davis alternative versions, Ornette Coleman, Bill Frisell, stuff like that). Song list and previews are here.

Casino Royale (original whacked out version). Great Bachrach soundtrack. Was used to sell stereo's for ages because the recording was so dynamic.

Last Tango in Paris-Gato Barbierri's sountrack matches the steaminess and sensuality of the film.

Hot Stuff (Ithink this was the name of the film)-Pairing Miles Davis with John Lee Hooker was risky but it worked. I heard when Miles heard John Lee in the studio, he smiled and said, "Man you up to your ears in that mud."

I think The Commitments soundtrack is pretty good. I also agree that the Run Lola Run soundtrack is great but the O Brother soundtrack is brilliant in combination with the movie.

Vanilla Sky- Cameron Crowe has the ear

Anything by the Farrelly Brothers- if the film sucks, the soundtrack is usually still worthwhile. And the films are usually pretty funny.

Phenomenon- excellent, except they excluded the original theme by Thomas Newman.

Garden State- the film was good, but soon forgotten. The soundtrack is a keeper.

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?- sensational, and worthy the Grammy it won for Album of the Year.

The Generals's Daughter- Try it...

Every Cameron Crowe movie has a great soundtrack. Singles was, besides a funny movie, practically a best of grunge album.

How can anyone leave off The Blue Brothers?

Now, if you want to talk about soundtracks that had an impact at the time, I nominate:
