M - Has something changed since your post? There are now signs throughout the WHOLE lot for NJT Employeee parking only. Exactly where will the skatpark be?

The skatepark is going to be located at the back right hand corner of the parking lot in front of the ambulance squad building.

I'll check into the signage issue - are these new signs?

Sullymw,
The Maplewood Community Pool is located at 187 Boyden Avenue. It is opposite the NJT building. As you enter the parking lot and make a right, you will drive to the far end of the parking lot ( you will be facing the Volunteer Ambulance Dept. building ) and the Skatepark will be at that end of the parking lot. Hope you can make it out to the opening.

Are there people interested in teaching a beginning skateboarder? My 11 year old gave it a shot but became discouraged. She beleives no one would teach her because she's such a novice. My encouragements haven't helped.

Tom R-Get your son enrolled in the Y's launch and grind program. They meet every Sat. at the old gym at the Maplewood Middle School. The program is run by a great guy named Kevin and it's probably the best place for someone to learn skateboarding. You should know that it's a free-form program so your son would have to ask for help but if he does, he will get it.

It's one of my daughters. I have no sons. (But don't sweat it.) Do you know what time this program is? Thanks a lot!

Tom Pris,

Bring your daughter to the High School at 7:30 this coming Fri., Nov. 21 to see the fencing movie and meet REAL LIVE OLYMPIC Athletes as well!

Seriously, I have two daughters, both are smart and creative, both are pettite and basically un-interested in athletics, both fence. Its not called physical chess for nothing. A quick mind is a fencer's greatest attribute, big, agile bodies don't win the day on the piste an agile mind does.

Fencing is one of the fastest growing sports in the USA for both boys and girls, and children can start out in the sport at a very young age. A lot of fencers live in the SOM community, but unfortunately the general public has little to no knowlege about the sport and the media does nothing to publicize it.

A bit of trivia, the number 1 ranked youth ten boy foil fencer in the US lives in Maplewood, and on Fri, Nov.21, at the High School, the Number 1 ranked men's sabre fencer in the WORLD!! will be visiting. So come out and enjoy the evening and expose your children to a great sport.

Speedie,

I'll bring this up at our Wednesday night meeting. I don't think it's going to be a problem - I have a feeling they just put signs up unaware of the skatepark location. Thanks for giving us a heads up on this.

Tom,

Skateboarding is one of those great sports for kids who don't like team sports and formal instruction while helpful, really isn't necessary. Launch and Grind is a great place to learn - kids do help each other and are extremely supportive. It's a really neat environment and one where you're daughter will feel welcome. There aren't a lot of female skateboarders around, so should she like it and stick with it, she'll definately get lots of attention and positive reinforcement. Bring your daughter to the Opening on Saturday to meet other skateboarders and the Pros - my son and his friends will be happy to help teach her the basics and show her the ropes. Hope to see you there.

Speedie,

The signs are only posted in the first two rows of the parking lot. The third row of parking spaces (where the skate equiptment is) is not NJT parking.

BTW - the equiptment is up and the kids are already testing it out and breaking it in...

Thanks to all who attended today and brought their kids on by to help us break in the Maplewood Skatepark. It was a great day - filled with fun, ooh's and ahhhs! Kudos to all who volunteered!
