I walked past the new restaurant on Valley Street in SO (next to liquor store) called Papillion and it looks beautiful inside!! I guess it just opened last week. Has anyone been there yet? |

Stopped by Papillon yesterday afternoon to check it out, and here's what I found out, FWIW: *Katie the Mixologist says that the opening over the weekend was packed, and that one may order from the full menu at the bar, (very spiiffy and already one of the coolest in any of the Oranges), and even order food to take out! *I met Al, who runs the front of the house at Papillon (Yanick runs the gorgeous kitchen), and he told me that they'll soon be getting in some lovely artwork for the temporarily bare walls in the dining room. *The menu is very lengthy and ambitious, as are both the mixed drink and wine lists. *They'll wait to get themselves well set up as a smooth-running operation before they begin an extensive ad campaign announcing the place to surrounding communities. * I intend to go soon (and hopefully often), and get to know the place better. And I don't even like Martinis... --Soda |

Went last night. The menu looked extremely good, and with Yannick's reputation I'm anxious to eat there. Sat at the bar, had a couple of drinks, and was very impressed with everything.

Can anyone comment on how appropriate it is for kids? I don't mean Chuck E Cheese appropriate, but is it very quiet & intimate or more "casual" like Cafe Arugala (which I would consider appropriate for well behaved kids) |

It is a little more formal than Cafe Arugula. I don't think I would bring kids there on a Fri./Sat. night. And of course one would assume your kids are well behaved until proven otherwise. |

FIRST MEAL REVIEW: Ahhhhh, Papillon! You can always tell a good place to eat: lots of truckdrivers...Tonight, though, most of the gear-grinders hanging at the bar wore ties and salon haircuts. They were all clearly trying to put the moves on the pretty barkeeps, but to no avail. Now on to better news: The kitchen is turning out splendid fare. Lamb and veal dishes were yummy, as was the rustic apple pie dessert. And the walls in the dining room are no longer bare, folks. In fact, it's a very NY-chic-looking place. Service, on the whole, was cheerful and solicitous, and Al (The Boss) made the rounds to greet all parties. By 8PM, the joint was jumpin'. Only a couple of minor booboo's: *They could use a coat rack and number tags. *Also, bus people who speak English. *No tongue-rings on the waitresses, please. *When dinner & drinks cost $100, I'd rather not be addressed as "You Guys". TABLE GOSSIP: Local in-the-know celeb couple spotted canoodling in a corner: The Lovely Mr. & Mrs. Pete Davis. He's the gastronomic dynamo behind "Quincy's Place", that trucker-approved bastion of good, solid Americanischer Fressarei. You know, the Ex-"Sun Tavern" location across the lot from "Gimme Jimmy's" on Valley in West Orange? Oooh, that Chicken-In-The-Basket! SUMMARY: Papillon's a winner. We'll all be back, to see if they can keep it up! And ya gotta love a joint with Johnny Walker Blue on the shelf... -Soda |
