Enuff politics already time for some entertainment picks.

DVD-Concert for George-Terrific film of the tribute concert for George Harrison. The sound is superb, performances A+, and the film looks really good (close to Last Waltz standards). It's a little strange watching George's son Dhani perform with all these great artists as he looks like a carbon copy of his father circa 1965. The DVD comes with two discs, with a lot of bonus material. Highly recommended.

CD-Burt Bacharach and Ronald Isley-If your not a fan of Bacharach, I doubt you will like this album. It's definitely more Bacharach influenced then Isley influenced. That being said, it's a terrific recording. Isley does an unbelievable job of interpreting this material and Bachrach overhauls the material just enough to suit Isley's more soulful style. I can't get this one off of the rotation in my car (my son wants to know if he has to make a reservation to listen to AC/DC in the car again).

Movie-Human Stain-Nothing can come close to the book but I thought this was really good. It's a real complex story and so much had to be glossed over but overall they did a good job. I thought the casting was off but Kidmann and Hopkins really pull it off.

OK-Your turn.

DVD -- Greendale (Neil Young). The solo acoustic versions of the songs on Neil's latest CD (the DVD comes with it) really shine.

DVD -- Abulum (Glen Philips). Former singer from Toad The Wet Sproket takes his solo act on the road. 5.1 audio versions of the cuts from his solo CD, plus many live, solo acoustic performances. This is good stuff. You can buy it here:
http://www.awarestore.com/store.cfm?ARTIST_ID=531&ACTION=SHOW_CAT&CATEGORY_ID=4

CD -- Can't See For Lookin' (Red Garland). Perfect for dinner, cocktails or romantic moments. I like to listen to it as I write.

CD -- Night Time (Dan Zanes). If you have kids ages 2 to 6, you should have this. It's exceptional music for people of all ages. We like it as much as our kids. Learn more about Dan here:
http://www.festivalfive.com/pages/home.php

Movie -- Clerks (Kevin Smith). Pure comedic brilliance. And filmed in Jersey too.

Clerks is a classic. probably filmed for under $100, too.

CD: Hello Interstate Managers, by Fountains of Wayne. I expected something light and pop-y, based on Stacy's Mom, but was pleasantly surprised to find great music, and a great blend of types, as well as what I consider very above average lyric-writing. at least one of their songs is very Oasis-sounding, maybe intentionally? very well-done.

DVD: Amelie. adorable French romantic comedy. not cloying like so many American romantic comedies. light but chewy. visual presentation is slightly surreal and a lot of fun. the story is fun as well. acting is dead-on and the cinematogrophy, you get lost in.

also highly recommend Donnie Darko. a beautiful, somewhat fearsome mind-bend. Jake Gyllenhall TOTALLY delivers. is he from MW/SO?

1-2 -- $100 and several bags of weed, I'd say.

Anyone interested in Glen Phillips (maybe you remember Toad's Adult Contemporary hit "All I Want") should check out the recording from last week's show at Fez. Here's the link:

Thanks for the Glen Phillips tip...Toad did get back together briefly earlier in the year and opened some shows on the West Coast for Counting Crows I think. "Dulcinea" is one of my all-time favorite discs.

CD:
Nada Surf 'Let Go', kind of reminds me of the Replacements.
Stellastar 'Stellastar', the Pixies are alive and well.

DVD:
Lord of the Rings: Two Towers (EXTENDED EDITION). Just like last years LOTR:Fellowship dvd's, the extended is even better than the theatrical cut.

Miller's Crossing: One of the lesser known Coen brothers movies, but also one of the best.

Hank --

No problem. Happy to spread the word.

Toad did a "reunion" tour last winter. I saw then twice in NYC and again in NJ. They were the headliners.

I enjoyed the shows, but these days I perfer the Glen solo sets. Small venues, interaction with Glen. Really good stuff.

If I had to pick a favorite Toad disc, it'd be Pale, followed by Bread and Circus.

Hey good choices keep em coming:

My 2 cents on some of the picks:
Greendale-I go back and forth on this. I'm a big Neil Young fan but I usually like his more melodic side. I have a feeling this recording will grow on me.

Lord of the Rings-Terrific but I have a 10 year old, which means I've seen this around 20 times-I NEED A BREAK!!!.

Fountains of Wayne-Great recording. I love bands who have the cojones to sound different on every tune. FOW do this on this CD and it works all the way through.

Amelie-Loved this movie. I could turn the sound down and block out the dialogue and just enjoy this for the visual feast it is. Audrey Tatou is also not exactly hard on the eyes.

Uke..Based on the above, I would heartily recommend Martin Sexton's CD Wonderbar. That man is the single most unselfconscious singer/musician I have heard in a long while. Tony Levin plays bass on the cd and its really a wonderful listen.

The best movie I've rented, that to date, noone else I know has seen...The Zero Effect. Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller. It's quirky, it's funny, it's different. It's also one of the easiest videos to find on the rack.

As long as were pulling out more obscure choices, I'd highly recommend the movie Joshua Then and Now (sadly not out on DVD-yet- but most of the local movie stores should have it). It's a movie made from a Mordechai Richler novel and it's hilarious, sad, touching etc, etc, etc. It stars James Woods and Alan Arkin (the scene where Joshua's mom strips for his friends as a Bar Mitzvah present is priceless).

As far as CD's-Run don't walk (actually you'd probably have more luck in ordering off of Amazon.com) to get ,"Do Right Man" by my hero Dan Penn. For those of you who don't know, Dan Penn, is a southern songwriter/singer who wrote a whole catalogue of classic soul songs (Do Right Woman-Aretha, Dark End of the Street,-James Carr, I'm Your Puppet-Purify Brothers, You Left the Water Running, on and on, he also produced the Box Tops-The Letter). It turns out Dan's voice is nearly as good as the great singers he wrote for. He's one of those white southerners who blurs the line between black and white , it's all just unadulterated soul, straight from the heart. He did this record around 7 years ago with the Memphis musicians who played on the originals and boy does it sound purty. He also put out a live album (from Dublin) with just him on an old beat up Gibson acoustic and his buddy Spooner Oldham on an old Wurlitzer electric piano. This ones a little harder to find as it's an import but you can get it through Amazon UK.com. If you don't like this music, I'm sorry, you aint got no soul.

There's an excellent new singer from Chicago - Rachel Yamagata. She has one 6-song EP out. I haven't heard her on FUV yet, but they're playing a song of hers a lot on WXPN.

You can't go wrong with Rufus Wainwright. He is amazing. His latest CD is great...as are all of them. Some nice complex music and lyrics from my most favorite tortured soul. I feel myself wanting to rescue him! (Seeing him this week in concert...)

The new Beatles release, "Let It Be ... Naked" is really nice. Crisp and detailed remastered sound, and very live sounding. "The Long And Winding Road" is like a new song altogether now that it's stripped of the strings and choruses, it's much more intimate.

Tom, what it really is is "Let It Be ... The McCartney Concept" instead of the original Glyn Johns masters. Not bad, but not what I was waiting for.

"Private Astronomy", music of Bix Beiderbecke, put together by Geoff Muldaur. Speaking of Wainwrights, that family is involved in this as well. Fabulous little band, (including an old college friend of mine, Mark Gould, on cornet.) Happy, charming, ethereal music.

Tom's right about Let It Be... Naked

"Across The Universe" sounds wonderful. And Angelo, I thought you'd have approved of the re-mixes of "For You Blue" and "I Me Mine." Those two songs have never sounded better.

And let's not forget "A Hard Day's Night" on DVD. It looks crisper and cleaner than ever. It's the best rock & roll movie of all time.

"Lost In Translation"
According to amazon.com, you'll have to wait until Feb. 3 '04 for the DVD release, so I'd recommend seeing it in a theater now. It is the best movie I've seen in years. It's one of those rare films that takes you to a place that feels absolutely real, with believable characters that you want to spend 2 hours with. Bill Murray was terrific -- he deserves an Academy Award for this performance.

parkah-If ya like Betty Wright check out her protege, Joss Stone. She's a 16 year old white girl from the U.K., that Betty Wright has taken under her wing and co-produced her 1st album. She uses most of the original musicians that played with Betty Wright. You won't believe that this girl is 16.

Ya can't go wrong with the new Al Green (secular), produced by his old cohort Willie Mitchell. If ya really want to get adventurous try any of the 3 albums by a guy named Lewis Taylor, he's a Brit who sounds like Marvin Gaye mixed with some more electronic/modern influences. The bad part is they have not released any of his CD's in the States. You can get them from Amazon.UK , they are all great listens (in my humble opinion).

The record company has been flogging Joss Stone's CD as if their lives depended on it. If you want good soul music, look to Betty Wright herself, or some Aretha, or your old copy of Dusty in Memphis. Joss Stone has an amazing voice, but she's WAY too young to sing music like that and have it sound believable or honest. I think the reason she's being touted so heavily is that she's a cute young (16 years old) blond thing, not because of her rather limited song-delivery talent.

Yeah - Al Green's new one is worth listening to - sounds like no time at all has passed since his last secular record - all his skills are still intact, and Willie Mitchell at 75 could teach most of the younger producers around a thing or three.

Also check out the new CD by The Dixie Hummingbirds - Diamond Jubilation. This group has been around for 75 years - and they sound fan-effing-tastic!
