We're looking for a place for 7 people, in any of the downtown neighborhoods - comfortable, reasonable with good food.

It's been way too long since we've been, and we've got friends coming back to town for the weekend.

Red Cat (22nd and 9th or 10th)- very New York in a low key way.

Cafe Loup - West 12th or 13th? in the Village - very good, totally neighborhood restaurant.

Cowgirl Hall of Fame on Verrick - dress way down, fun for kids.

Chumley's. Chumley's burgers. They are huge, and they put them on giant toasted english muffins. Yum. Good luck finding it. 86. Bedford/Barrow.

Salon Mexico 26th at Lex--really creative Mexican cuisine (emphasis on "cuisine"), low key atmosphere, great margharitas. The owner/chef is omnipresent and a fun guy, also.

I second Chumley's. You will definately have to look for it because it was a speakeasy in the 1920's so there is no sign on the door.

Boca Chica or Esperanto - both Brazilian.

Boca Chica - 1st and 1st (yes - the Nexus of the Universe)
Esperanto - Avenue C and 9th (Live music too)

We've been hooked since our honeymoon.

The caipirinhas at Esperanto are the closest
to the REAL thing (and I've sampled a lot!)
and $5.00 each.

Each great for groups.

White Horse Tavern on Hudson, Dylan Thomas supposedly drank himself to death there. Good burgers, very casual. They have cider as well.

For filling Ukranian food try Veselka's on 2nd Ave at I think 9th street (maybe 8th).

Veselka is 2nd Ave and 9th St...would be one of my suggestions, depending on what sort of comfortable and casual someone is looking for.

Also depends if youre going for dinner or for lunch...Id suggest Zoe in SoHo for any meal, but lunches are an excellent value and its a good place to stop if youre in SoHo.

Thanks everyone. You've named some of my favorites, too. (Definitely Veselka's sweet potato pierogis are worth a trip.)

I was too vague in my request - it's for dinner. I'm looking to go someplace I've never been, so Esperanto is looking good. And they'll all go on the list for the future!

I'm going to Jean Claude on Sullivan this evening. It's consistently pretty good and they don't charge a corkage fee if you BYO.

The Grange Hall - it's on one of those curvy little streets tucked away in the village. West of Washington Sq Pk, around Barrow, Cornelia, Jones, etc. I usually wander those eensy back streets until it appears like a mirage.

Tasty American food, casual, comfy, but chic and stylish too. Everytime I've eaten there it feels like my private little "find".

Home Restaurant
20 Cornelia St.

Le Jardin Bistro
5 Cleveland Pl. (between Kenmare & Spring Sts.)

Both have small, cozy dining rooms and also outdoor gardens for dining in good weather, and they're reasonably priced with delicious, simple food.
