I'm buying a trumpet for my nephew for his bar mitzvah. He's been playing for a couple of years, and I think he'd enjoy something better than the rental instrument he's been using. He's been playing for 2 years and seems fairly committed to continuing. Any advice on what type of trumpet would be appropriate for that age, and where one might make the purchase at a reasonable price? Thanks! |

Not sure of what type...but Sam Ash or Guitar Center should both carry them and they are literally across the street from each other on route 22. Good luck! |

World of Music in Summit has used trumpets, mostly in decent shape, usually at 1/2 price of bigger stores that don't specialize in wind instruments-I bought my son's trombone there, and several friends have purchased brass instruments there as well. 908-273-1171 |

Take a drive down to Woodbridge, to DIllon Music (www.dillonmusic.com). I've heard good things about the Blessing horns, which are at the low end of the price scale and go for around $300. The Yamahas and Kantsuls are better, but a more intermediate price point. But Dillon has a huge selection of used horns, so you might end up finding a real keeper, something that would inspire him to play even more. The nice thing about most of these is that if the instrument is well cared-for it doesn't lose any of its value over time. So if he gets really serious late in high school a horn you spend $800 on now will still be worth $800 in resale value down the road. But find out what his rental horn is, so you don't end up getting the same thing! |

I second Dillion Music. It's a brass player's paradise. |

For the trumpet players out there, a gentleman named Greg Rivkin will be playing with a trio at Cent'Anni tomorrow, Thursday Jan 5, at 8pm. Allegedly a fantastic trumpet player - come on down! |
