Considering catching a movie this weekend and was wondering if anyone has seen either Munich and/or Brokeback Mountain and has a recommendation? I've read good reviews on both, but always interested in "real" opinions.

I went to "Brokeback Mountain" last weekend and I found it riveting. It is definitly a film not to miss. All the performances were top notch. Heath Ledger was amazing. But I find that all Ang Lee's films are just wonderful. Both "Munich" and "Brokeback" are playing in Montclair so you can't go wrong planning dinner and movie.

We get to see very few movies, and we faced that same decision two weeks ago. (We had a babysitter for one day and decided to do lunch and a movie in Montclair). We chose Brokeback Mountain because I just love Ang Lee's films. We had lunch first at a yummy Ethiopian restaurant and then we saw the movie. The movie was fantastic. Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams and Jake Gyllenhal were just great. I highly recommend both the restaurant and the movie. Enjoy!

I saw Munich tonight and I would be curious to hear what other people think about it.

I saw Brokeback Mountain last night. After a very short while, I forgot that I was sitting in a movie theater, so engrossed was I in this beautiful love story.

The actors were amazing, the scenery gorgeous, and the story was so poignant.

Brokeback Mountain is a powerful film, builds slowly, so be prepared to sit back and take it in while the story unfolds. Try to get a hold of the short story - it was on the New Yorker website for free til recently, but was taken off, I guess because of all the interest. As someone on MOL noted, it's amazing. I found that because the short story doesn't have some of the scenes in the movie that connect the narrative and invent some characters that flesh these scenes out, it is more unsettling. Haven't seen Munich, but plan to do so.

I don't know the story, so I don't know if this is an accurate transcription, but you can read it here:

My partner and I saw "Bareback" Mountain a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful movie, thought Michelle Williams was incredible! At times I couldn't understand Heath Ledger because he was speaking so softly. This movie may move too slowly for some, especially those used to watching Steven Segal movies.

Munich is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Looking forward to Brokeback this weekend.

RR, You either love Malick or hate him, and I love him. It's the first film of his that I've seen on the big screen and it was amazing. (Right now, it's only playing on one screen near Lincoln Center. He's supposedly still editing it for wide release.)

Of the reviews I've read, two have called it a "fever dream," which is a pretty apt description. The dialogue is very spare, but much is communicated. I've never seen a director who is able to capture the earth's rhythms and infuse it into the story like Malick. (That may sound silly, but this movie has a distinct, but subtle, hallucinogenic quality.) The sound editing and cinematography are fantastic.

The girl who played Pocahontas, Q'Orianka Kilcher, was absolutely incredible. I would have cast someone besides Colin Farrel, but he was still good.

Saw both Brokeback and Munich. It's a tough call. Munich begins with the pace and tone of a Bourne Supremacy type of film. However,it is far superior and much more compelling than the usual "European-spy-thriller" film because of its theme of ambiguous morality and, of course, because the slaughter of the Israeli Olympic athletes is an actual historic event. Munich was riveting but I wasn't sure I liked the ending.
Brokeback was beautiful in every sense of the word but, sad, sad, sad. See both!

Just wanted to put my two cents in for Brokeback. Recently saw it and loved it. Visually beautiful, incredible acting, riveting story. Heartbreaking and really stays with you in your thoughts after.

We finally made it to see Brokeback Mountain last night (hope to see Munich next time).

Overall, I enjoyed the movie & thought the cinematography and acting were very impressive. I think my expectations going in were a bit too high, so naturally I was not as impressed as I was expecting, but it was a very good movie & worth seeing.

I read the short story (Brokeback Mountain, not Munich) as well. It was lovely. The movie was very faithful to the story while also successfully extrapolating from it to flesh out the plot.

Perhaps this was because I saw the movie first, but I felt that the movie was more successful in depicting the love that these two cowboys had for each other. Usually, I find a movie to be less fulfilling than its original source, but in this case, the film was much more powerful.
