Hello,

We're interested in purchasing an upright piano for our two boys to start lessons. We'd appreciate any tips or advice. Thanks!

Kathleen

Check out craigslist for used uprights. Here are some:

http://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/msg/123299097.html ($900; Princeton)

http://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/msg/121192094.html ($700; Lyndhurst)

http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/msg/123179182.html ($300; Port Washington, NY)

You can also visit a piano dealer, although you'll probably pay more.

Around about this time of year, if I recall correctly, Seton Hall University's Music Department usually has pianos for sale as they renew their inventory.

Give the Music Dept there a call and see if...

Check out Andy's Family Music Center in Livingston on Mt. Pleasant, not far west of Livingston Ave. (http://andysmusiccenter.com/)
We got a used piano there, and a few friends have as well. They will deliver and pay for the first tuning. They will also buy back the piano if you want to upgrade. Nice folks.

Get "The Piano Book" by Larry Fine. I found it very helpful when I was looking for my piano. He has a low opinion of the "University Music Department" piano sales, saying that they're usually a way for piano dealers to truck in a bunch of pianos that had nothing to do with the school, and convince people that they're getting a bargain. I went to the Seton Hall sale, and that seemed to be the case.

Call Suzanna at 973-762-7229. She just told me that Seton Hall University is getting rid of old pianos and has more information. They'll be cheap or free.
