Our wood floors are extremely dull. Any suggestions on how to get them to shine? Does someone come in and coat it with something or is their a product I can use? They are so old I don't want to have them sanded down anymore.

Whome, we had our upstairs floors refinished by Cluadio last year and they are beautiful. To keep them looking great, my dear Granny told me to use Holloway House wood floor products. The refinished floors as well as the ones that need refinishing, look stunning. They shine, are healthy and clean. Usually I can find Holloway in Pathmark or Walmart. I also discovered that Home Depot online carries it in larger sizes. I buy the Floor Wash and Floor Shine. Good luck!

When you say refinish, what do they do? Do they sand or just coat the floor with something? And how much for one room?

Claudio sanded them down and applied polyurethane to them. They look like glass, and the Holloway House stuff keeps them looking that way. I belive Claudio charged $1.50/sq.ft.(?) He also did the stairs and landing, and he charges per step. I can't remember his sq. foot pricing, but I do recall it being very reasonable. His work is awesome.

Sure! Claudio - Russo Flooring. 973-418-2417. It's a message machine and sometimes it doesn't sound so good, but leave a message for him anyway and he'll get back to you. He has rave reviews from Maplewoodonliners and you can search for him in the archives. Good luck

Whome, I just checked my basement. The Holloway product is "Quick Shine", not "Floor Shine" :-)

I would encourage anyone using ANY floor refinishing company inspect some samples of their work. I checked a job that Claudio was very proud of, and found chatter marks, debris in the finish, swirl marks... I was shocked that he would show me this job as a reference.

Forewarned is forearmed, and if he did good work for you... great!

Does Claudio, or anyone, wax floors as opposed to polyurethaning? We made a major tactical error when we bought our house. We pulled up the carpeting, saw beautiful maple floors that were waxed, and had a floor guy rewax and buff them. We thought that polyurethaning would add too much shine, and the wax finish was soft and subtle looking.

At this point the wax has pretty much worn off in the front hallway due to the traffic, and other areas could be retouched. I'm very much regretting not going the poly route. I've long since lost the phone # of the guy we used, and have never heard him mentioned here.

mooewe, Claudio just did a major job for a friend/neighbor of mine. One room in their house the wood was too damaged to be refinished and had to pulled up and replaced with beautiful new wood. The floors look amazing. Claudio will ask you what you prefer. He can give you a darker and/or lighter wood finish or mix and match. Once sanded, he will "paint" on the floor all the colors you are interested in and allow you time to think about your choice. He also has built and installed shoe moldings for several rooms in our home. I stand by his work 100%.

Thanks, Kibbe, but I really don't think that sanding is an option for us now. It would mean completely moving out of a foyer, den, living room and dining room, all of which are open to one another, and that's something so major we're simply not willing to do it. I'll give Claudio a call, though, and see if there's anything he can do.

I know what you mean! We really wanted Claudio to do our first floor because the company we hired years ago (the name escapes me), did an awful job. Claudio did our second floor (2 rooms, closets, landing and stairs), but we were getting new furniture for those areas that had not been delivered yet, so it worked out great. But moving all of our furniture from the first floor? Not going to happen anytime soon! By the way, Claudio and his crew will move your stuff for you -- you'll just have to put it back.

we tried to use claudio a few months ago-I think he low balled the offer because when we were ready he would not do the job and offered to have us use a third party. Call Bryant!

mooewe- the key is in the kind of polyurethane finish - gloss, semi-gloss and satin. IMO, satin is the nicest, softest flatest look. semi and gloss look more like a basketball court finish.

Claudio was a disaster for us. I had to go with someone else mid-job.

We're also thinking about having our floors done and it sounds like the reviews on Claudio are mixed. Does anyone else have a recommendation for a wood floor refinisher?

First off, you should bite the bullet, have them sand the floor and do it right. Properly sanded and refinished, you shouldn't have to worry about the floor for decades. And there are ways of dealing with the disruptions of moving things around (see below).

We used Falcon Floors before we moved into our place and were very happy with the results. As with Claudio, any floor service worth their salt will show you test samples of stains on small patches of your floor, so you will see what works best with the wood you have.

If you are concerned about disruption on the first floor, there is a way around it:
(1) do one room at a time, so you have a place to store the moved furniture.
(2) Have them use the "dust" machine which is essentially an industrial scale vacuum that is housed outside in a trailer, to suck up all your floor dust so you won't have to deal with the mess.

Here is Falcon's business listing from Superpages.com (Verizon's website):
