I got some quotes for dormers but there were out of my price range. We're getting a new roof and the roofers suggested we get skylights instead. Any suggestions on brand? Type? Tips? Also, how do I figure out my roof pitch? The roofers want us to buy the skylights & they'll install. They recommended Velux brand.

Velux, definitly! Top of the line window and state of the art flashing kit, but.... only if installed correctly and they are a PITA when the install is screwed! I have two and both are operating with a manual crank. Makes for good ventilation and they swing in to clean exterior glass. Do not install on pitches lower than 4/12.

Ok for every 12" horizontal measure vertically until you match the roof pitch and form a triangle this formula will give you the roof pitch. Also I would seriuosly suggest the Velux Balcony windows, they form an actuall balcony with railing and glass front. They need to be framed by a pro. and will be substatially less money than a dormer. (probably 2900-3500 installed) and yes VELUX is a brand I have used for 17 years myself. PL if you want me to give you model numbers.

I'd be VERY curious to hear what your dormer quotes were... if you wouldn't mind letting us know?

We only had 2 roofing companies come and only one did dormers. Both do skylights. $10,000 for a 10ft dormer. $8,000 for an 8 ft dormer. They gave us a quote for something else we want done in the house and it was very high. They said we really don't need a dormer b/c our attic roof is high and it will be a spacious room for a bedroom (for our kids). We plan to do a bedroom in a few years.
