I am looking to install chair rail molding in my dinning room and I am worried about damaging the plaster walls by hammering numerous nails. Does anyone have experience with this or suggestions?

First off you have to nail into the studs behind the plaster. Second, drill a pilot hole before nailing. This should eliminate 95% of the potential problems.

The only way to do this is to use a pehumatic (ok help me here) air hammer. Set the power setting to drive and counter sink the brad nail in one quick shot.

This avoids all the plaster damage.

A friend at work suggested "Liquid Nails" or some other sort of glue. Has anyone tried this? How'd it go?

Given the nature of plaster, liquid nails or PL200 wouldnt be the way to go as you would have no way to apply even, constant pressure on the chair rail while the adhesive sets up.Used with nails though,it would substansially[?]improve the holding power.I would draw a light, level line,on the center of where you would put the chair rail, and using a stud finder, mark out my studs.[possibly 16"on center]I would then use a small[1-16,1-8]drill bit to dbl.ck.my findings. The chair rail will eventually cover the holes so dont worry about that.I would then draw a light, level line at the bottom of the chair rail and starting with the longest run,cut it to fit, liquid nail it,[in the center so it doesnt ooze out top or bottom],and using a drill bit slightly smaller than a 8d finish nail, drill thru the rail, plaster and partially into the framing.Carefully nail it making sure it doesnt slide up or down courtesy of the adhesive.
