There are three copper tubes coming out of the T in the wall, where the water supply comes from. Can these tubes be replaced, or do I need to replace the union?

What is the third pipe for? Do you have a recirculating system for instant hot water?

Ok. It's a delta tub/shower monofaucet control. It was leaking. I tried to disassemble it to replace the washers and springs, but instead of the cap unscrewing, the whole thing turned and snapped off. At the back of the big round thing in which the washers are (a two piece brass thing about 2" in diameter and about 3-4" long), and three copper tubes that connect to the brass X that I assume control the water. The X has four holes -- two inlets for the hot and cold, and two outlets -- one going up to the shower, and one going down to the tub filler. The X thing has three copper tubes that connect to the brass thing, and the copper tubes broke off. Do I have to replace the whole X thing, or is there some way to replace just the copper tubes?

Peter, my suggestion is to take the schematic and parts to Palmer plumbing.

From the schematic its unclear what broke off. Do the tubes that broke off screw in or are they brazed on?

If the latter -- then my guess is you need to open up the wall and replace the whole fixture. What's behind the shower? Can you easily open up a wall so you don't have to do tile work?

Peter,

One is hot in, one is cold in.
The lower one is from the pull-push diverter valve and goes to the tub fill.
The upper connections goes to the shower.

It is not often that I say this, but this is just a step beyond DIY unless you have the tools and have done successful plumbing work before.

And you are going to need tile and drywall repair afterward.

Good luck,
George

Peter, it seems you could not have done more damage to this thing or to the plumbing that makes it work.
As the others suggested, you'll need to open a large section of the wall surrounding the fixture, cut back the plumbing to expose good piping and have a new unit installed.
