Anyone know of a good contractor for a bathroom remodel? Also, when is a permit by the city required?

You'll require a permit if performing anything structural, relocating plumbing and/or electric.
Wish I could recommend someone but everyone I know is busy.

If all your fixtures are going back where the old ones were, thats considered a direct replacement and while you still need a permit, the rules are somewhat relaxed. Most bathrms.require elec.,plumbing, framing and insulation rough insp.prior to closing things up.Final insp.incl.elec.,plumbing and building.

I'm in the middle of a bathroom renovation that came about quite unexpectedly in the form of a leaking toilet. (Drips from the flushed waste falling into my dining room -- bon appetit!) The repairs have snowballed into a complete (needs a permit) renovation. So far, I've been very pleased with the competence, attentiveness, and patience of Carlo Megna from Megna Tile.

You should definitely get a quote from him. Our project is not done, so I can't comment on the finished product, but in all the planning I've really felt like I found a gem. He's an old school tradesman who takes pride in his work -- not discount-McMansion-Home Depot-style stuff.

We just signed a proposal to have our bathroom completely gutted and renovated - including moving of fixtures and plumbing. The contractor is working on getting the permits now and we plan to start the work sometime in February. I expect them to do a good job because they came highly recommended on this message board. If you want to ask me again in late March / early April when it's all done, I'll let you know how it turns out. Otherwise, I would just suggest searching the archives - there are lots of recommendations for bathroom and kitchen contractors.
