I love the look/impact of these black countertops but I'm not a great cleaner and wonder do they looked marked/smeared easily from cups etc?

Does anyone have any experience? We're thinking Black Galaxy color at the moment....Is black a neutral color for resale?!Thanks

I would think that black is not considered a neutral color and if you're thinking of selling, go with something less dramatic. My daughter put a black granite with copper flecks countertop in her master bath - she also has copper sinks & fixtures. It looks wonderful - but she's not planning on selling anytime soon.

We have black Silestone (Stellar Night) in our bathroom. I love the look but can tell you watermarks show much more than on the white version (Stellar Snow)in our girls' bathroom or even than on the Soapstone counters in our kitchen. (Silestone is a quartz product, but it looks similar to granite.)

That said, I love black and really dislike so called neutrals (beiges). Black counters look great with dark woods like cherry, lighter woods like maple and painted finishes too. If I did a black granite counter, I'd hone it or texture it to look softer and less shiny.

We did black granite in our hoboken condo a few years ago. Looks gorgeous and was great for resale, but I wouldn't do it for our house now - similar to a black car, looks great after it's just been cleaned, but otherwise shows stains/watermarks.

I would pass...try something lighter

VI Girl, how do you like the Silestone? Any regrets? Do you recommend over granite? I'm told the cost is similar, but some on MOL have suggested Silestone is more $$ than granite. Did you only consider the Silestone brand or did you check out Cambria? Last, who did you use for retail/install? Thanks!

I have absolutely no regrets using the Silestone in the bathrooms. We were lucky, I looked at samples at Expo and then found this site www.e-counters.com. We decided to save some hassle and had them undermount the white Kohler sinks for us, and our vanity tops were stock sizes so we saved quite a bit of $$$. Our contractor (who made our cabinetry) installed the tops very easily.

We have black granite in our kitchen (with cherry cabinets). I love the look and I purposely chose the plain black because I don't like the speckled look of most granites. That being said, the plain color does show more water spotting etc. than speckles would. I went to an open house today where the kitchen granite was mostly black but with some dark-green--in retrospect I might have preferred that.

We have a large kitchen with light cabinets, the counter top we used appears black and takes on different color tones based on lighting. The Granite we used is Butterfly Green (not green looking at all)
take a look at this color and before you decide, make sure to bring home a piece of the granit to see it in your kitchen.

Thanks for the input. Its true you should see the pieces in daylight and preferably in your own home as the light plays tricks with it.
The hunt is still on - I fear dark will never look clean in my house but I too have seen a black with green fleck which was gorgeous.
I may go totally traditional (sounds boring in comparison doesn't it?!) with Sardinian Beige (a bit like luna pearl) color afterall with a slate grey color floor.

Ours is black and we love it. I guess it's the "pattern", because it doesn't look dirty to me even when it is. It doesn't particularly look like the "germ" granite that I don't like.........sort of a denser and more regular pattern. It's a lovely contrast with white cabs/brushed nickel hardware/SS appliances/white subway tile backsplash. I think in this context, it is fairly traditional and neutral, but perhaps I'm dead wrong. I'm loving it, and hope I don't have to worry about resale anytime soon!

interesting tangent...i was recently sent a real estate newsletter from Gail Middleton (Burgdorff Short Hills) which cited an article that said that buyers have come to "expect" granite!! Who knew?!

That being said, as granite goes, darker colors seem to be the most desirable. I might suggest you avoid anything with too much glitter or sparkle, as the look becomes a bit more contemporary which might not appeal to everyone.

Also, the wall street journal recently published a piece on what's "in" and "out" in decor/remodeling and they advise against matte stone finishes (you can get granite that is tumbled)...as it stains more easily. Their opinion, not mine!!
