With 5 people in the house, there are ALWAYS crumbs and debris on the floor of the kitchen and dining room. Roomba seems like the answer to my problem, but is it just too good to be true? Does it really cover the whole room? Is the suction strong enough? I guess I could always buy/try/return from Bed Bath & Beyond, but if it's a real dud of a product I won't even get my hopes up. |

My understanding (from my latest-gadget stepmom) is that it works, but is slow as hell and doesn't do so well with corners & odd turns. It picks stuff up, but takes an hour to do a room. I'm half tempted to get one, tho, just to toture the cats. |

The Wall St. Journal reviewed the Roomba and its competitors about a year ago and came to the conclusion that they are indeed too good to be true. Alas, with three little ones and no dog, I dream of clean floors... |

It may take an hour to do a room but with the new Roomba, you can schedule it to clean while the family is asleep. I also hear that it does not deal well with carpets that have tassels but I think you can "tell" it to skip that part of the room. |

They are a little quirky and my biggest beef is they can't be serviced. At least I haven't found anyone who services them. The Roomba is not a substitute for a real vacuum but it is a great supplement. It may take an hour to do a room (I think that is an exaggeration from my experience) but the point is it is not YOUR hour that it's taking. You just push the button and go about your business. Would you rather take 10 minutes to vacuum manually or would you rather take 10 seconds to push a button? Very good for cheerios and cat hair and all the kind of crap that is better to take care of several times a week rather than letting it build up and up. Our house is cleaner since we got one. We run it a few times a week in the heavily trafficked areas like dining room and living room, and it really keeps things much nicer. I would personally go with the cheap model and avoid the bells and whistles. Especially for your first. The kids like to turn it on and watch it run around and the cats just skeedaddle. Having it run in the middle of the night would, for me, seem silly. Also they do tend to get a little tripped up sometimes (at least in our house they do) and sometimes you may need to give it a little help. For instance ours gets wedged under the dining room table sometimes. I'd rather just have it running while I'm up. And the idea of having a remote control for these things -- I just can't understand that. Just what I need another remote to lose -- I think I am still capable of bending over to push the stupid button.

I agree with WNB. It's a suppplement to a regular vacuuming. You have to be careful not to net it fall down the stairs. |
