This is a question for the Master Plumber or any secret plumbers wannabes: i have 3 toilets by Bemis that constantly get clogged even with the slightest amount of toilet paper and/or waste. The other 2 toilets in the house are by Kohler and have been clogged maybe once or twice over the last 3 1/2 years. My questions are 1) is the problem the toilet themselves in the way they are designed or is it the "sewage" hole where the waste gets flushed out too small; and 2) would replacing the 3 Bemis toilets with a better manufacturer/model help this clogging problem? if it's a matter of replacing the toilets with a better one, i would gladly do it. any recommendations of manufacturer and model that have a good "flush"? my back is killing me trying to work the plunger and tonight's clog is litterally the last straw that broke the "camel's back." thanks. p.s. i just read about a "Power Flush" device that one can install in the toilet tank to double the flushing power. it costs about $25. does this device work well and is it a better/cheaper alternative than to buy a new toilet? |

Are you certain that the toilets are made by Bemis and not just the toilet seats? Lift the tank lid and see if there is another brand name. I can tell you that the newer Gerber toilet is prone to frequent stoppages. |

Our Kohler Devonshire toilets clog A LOT too, and I always use Scott tissue. I'd be curious to find out about this power flush thing. |

Try either a Toto with a G-Max flushing system or an American Standard with a Champion flushing system. These systems use extra large openings that are virtually clog free. See the American Standard here: http://www.americanstandard-us.com/planDesign/performance/BestFlush/best_flush.a sp The Toto here: http://www.totousa.com/innovation_landing.asp

I have been advised that Toto are the way to go -anyone actually own one? We have a Gerber (probably cheapest version there is)from the previous owner which is a notorious clogger. Thanks |

We got Toto toilets in our new house on the advice of an architect friend. We love them. I won't say that they are 100% clog-proof but they function a lot better than most of the low-flow toilets I have had the misfortune to encounter. |

If you're looking for the best in super-flush-power and can't settle for less (and who really should?), go with a "pressure-assisted" model, the greatest new toilet world technology. Most people have the traditional "gravity" toilets which uses the water weight for pressure. The "pressure-assisted" uses pressurized air power, and outperforms even the old 3.5 Gallon Per Flush models, (the current code is 1.6 GPF max - which congress is reconsidering because there are so many of you frustrated flushers out there). They are louder however, but some might call that an attribute, finding the vigorous whoosh satisfying. I havent used any "power flush" retrofit devices, but I would not think them to be very effective. Increasing flush power is more complicated than it seems a $25 band-aid could handle. Happy Sitting. |

I also vote for Toto-- we replaced one of our clogging toilets with a Toto (with G-MAx-- have to have the G-Max) and are just amazed at the power of the flush. |

Pressure assisted flushing is terrible. So noisy. It's like going to the bathroom at Giants stadium yet now its your house. The Toto (which I chose) is quiet and has been flawless in its operation. The soft close seat they offer is excellent. No more slamming of the toilet seat. |

We have a cadet, which has a very small opening and clogs. So we shopped for one with what looked like a big opening and got a Kohler and it works very well. I'm going to get one of those things the Oracle posted, though. Looks fun. |

Toto's are a good choice for most....but I stand by pressure assisted. If its power you want, you will like the noise, it means you will never plunge. If you are jolted by the sound of a seat closing, go with Toto, and have them throw in the heated seat option for you too. |

Love the soft-close seat of our Toto "Augusta", which has needed plunging probably twice in 7 years. It looks really nice too. |

I most often recommend Toto to my clients and I really dislike power-flush units. It's a job in itself trying to find parts to repair them because the technology has changed several times over the years. It's too sophisticated for its own good. Toto uses a typical flushing system designed with a few slight improvements that make all the difference. Master Plvmber |

On the subject of power flushes, I saw something to consider. On one of the cable channels I saw a study that was done on flushing toliets. Amazing to watch was a normal home toliet, where a cloth was placed on the floor around the unit. The cloth was treated with a substance to capture water droplets from the flush spray that made it out of the bowl. Then the cloth was placed in a unit that allowed the captured droplets to grow, kinda like a large (petri Sp?) dish and demostrated the spray pattern. Yuk, on what grew from spray from a normal flush toliet. Then the power toliets. More than Double Yuk. You do not even want to see the material that grew following a power flush. Also tested were those units in public places, the Sloan valve system. Yuk as well. It was clear that all toliets spray matter from the bowl and out on the floor. I now flush with the lid closed and me standing up and facing away. |

Late at night while letting the dogs out, so I don't know the channel. That Doctor out of New York who had a health show for a while, Dr. Dean Adell. It was interesting to say the least. |

thanks for all the inputs. after my original posting, i litterally spent all night on the internet researching the best flushing toilets. armed with my info, i went out the next day and purchased 3 new TOTO toilets, all of which have the G-Max gravity-flushing technology. i couldn't believe how excited i was to have them all installed the following day by our plumber; one would have thought that i was having a new bathroom installed instead of just a new toilet. after 2 weeks worth of performance, i'd like to report that i am happy with my TOTO products because none has clogged and the flushing noise is not too bad. they were expensive toilets but they greatly improved my quality of life. worth every penny. p.s. i also purchased the device suggested by Oracle of MOL; hope i will never have to use it. p.s.s. there was a great article in the Today section of the Star-Ledger (either on thursday 2/2 or friday 2/3) that listed a website containing a complete ratings of all current toilets in the market by their flushing performance. i saw the report online but unfortunately did not print it out or remember the website name. can someone find out the website for all of us? it's a great resource if one is shopping for a toilet b/c it is a very comprehensive rating/research. |

i finally found the article that reviews toilet performance: John Koeller's ("Toilet Guru") "Maximum Performance Testing of Toilet Models" Very comprehensive report of every toilet's flushing power and attributes. The best report i found when considering a toilet to buy. http://www.cuwcc.org/uploads/product/MaP-6th-Edition-1-30-06.pdf (scroll down to page 24 for summary) |
