OUr 30 year old gas steam boiler is broken (per PSE&G it can not be fixed) and needs to be replaced. UGH...Does anyone have an estimate of what this may cost and recommendation for installers/plumbers? As always - thanks! |

We had a gas boiler put in. It's the water type, not steam. Not sure what the cost difference would be. It cost us about $4800. The company we hired came in under their estimate and finished the job ahead of schedule. They did a very nice job. Premier Plumbing and Heating 973-509-0252

We just had a gas-fired steam boiler replaced by Quality Air Conditioning and Heating: 973-467-0553. It was a little over $5k, which was almost HALF of what PSEG wanted for the same job! |

Replaced our gas-fired steam boiler last month. Gateway did the work (which involved undoing some problems with the previous installation) for I think $5,400. The other estimate we got was within $100 of the same. They were in and out in 1 day and left the basement cleaner than it was. |

Just curious, but why do you think that it costs so much for a one day job? I have no doubt that the boiler itself and materials are expensive, but there must be a huge profit on this type of job then. Is there a lot of preliminary work that goes into a boiler replacement that we just don't see? We have to have our oil furnace replaced this year sometime and I am starting to think about these things... FYI, I am basing my question on all of the companies and all of the prices listed above. I'm not questioning any one company. Handygirl

We just did ours in September. Switched from oil to gas. The price we got included removal of the old boiler and installation of the new was $5700 give or take. Gateway did the installation and subbed out the removal of the old boiler. We are very happy with our new boiler. |

handygirl, Certainly the boiler itself is an expensive part of the job. Also, the labor involved in tearing apart the old boiler, installing the new boiler & hauling away the old boiler isn't trivial. Also, note that any prices listed above may be irrelevant for your particular house. There could be huge variations in the size, make and model of the equipment being used, for example. I'd suggest everyone get at least 3 estimates. Make sure at least one of the estimates is from PSEG, so when you spend over $5k on your new boiler, you'll think "wow....ONLY $5k+ isn't so bad" |

Handygirl - not sure yet as I haven't seen the gas bill for this month. Last month's bill included a couple of months catchup and was around $500. I have to think that we will wind up spending more on heating this year as a result of the price increase but that will be offset by having a more efficient boiler. We keep our house very warm and spend a small fortune on heat when we're actually in the house. |

We had oursteam system replaced last spring by Marina Plumbing in Hillside 908-686-9086. The cost was in the 4.5K - 5.5K range ( I am trying to forget). We are very pleased with the Marina's service. |
