Around here its pretty normal in February to see the tips of leaves from bulbs beginning to peek out. They do seem to be higher this year due to the warm weather and lack of snow cover (I think the latter is because when the snow is on the ground we cannot see the growth). Somehow they seem to survive a hard frost and blossum in the spring. Of course, if our trees begin to blossum soon the flowers, and any fruit, would be affected by frost. Having spent my formative years in the Midwest, I am still astonished at the mild NJ winters, how early we begin to see signs of spring, and how early we can plant annuals without danger of frost. |
