Lost power in the house last night and after I flipped the breakers back on we can no longer turn off the light in the kitchen. So the only way I can turn the kitchen light out is from the basement box now. |

That sounds bad to me. Did the switch burn somehow? I'd get someone to look at at it today and I'd leave the breaker off. |

I agree with Themp. It sounds like the switch shorted out and needs to be replaced. The short probably tripped the main breaker in your service panel. |

A bit more investigation: I think it's the wall switch only. Other lights on the same circuit can be turned off and on. |

Dave, you still have a dangerous condition. Replace the switch and it would be a good idea to have an electrician check out the system.

No, it's the switch in the kitchen on the wall adjacent to the dining room. I'm off to pick up a new switch tomorrow. |

Just so you know, a short in the light fixture will give you the same result. Remember when I took down the light in the mud room, we found the wires with the insulation burned off and when I touched it, it shorted. We fixed that, but it is likely you have the same problem in the kitchen. Try the switch, if it does not solve the problem remove the light fixture, make sure all the wires in the box are whole, insulated and no metal parts are stuck into the sides. Later, George |

Tried new switch and same problem, so it's in the fixture. |

Glad to see that you made it. The fixture is not that hard, look for metal wires touching other wires or metal parts such as the box, screws, nails and the armor (bx) that wraps around the wires. Let me know if you need help. |
