We have a chimney leakage problem, as evidenced by the water damage on the ceiling of the 2nd floor (right below chimney base in attic).

We've gotten a bunch of estimates as well as a bunch of opinions on what's wrong. Most recent one was from Chimneys Unlimited in West Orange. It's reasonable. Almost too reasonable! Anyone have any experience with them?

I don't trust chimney companies. Do you have a trusted roofer? I'd have a roofer check it out first - if he says a chimney person needs to do it, get his referral or let him check your current estimates.

Good luck!

We had a similar situation - some water coming through the roof around the chimney area.

We had a couple of roofing people come out to do estimates. We ended up going with R&G. But, when he came to do the estimate, he said that part of the chimney needed to be repointed first by Elite Chimney and then he could repair the roof. Both the repointing and roof repair were small jobs and not much $. We haven't had a problem since.

Just a correction on my earlier post. R&G didn't tell me to have Elite Chimney do the job, that's just who we chose... When I reread my post, I realized I made it sound like R&G told us we had to use Elite, which wasn't the case...

What's the number for Elite? This year I need to get some repointing work done at the top of my chimney.

Thanks

Jason

The most likely scenario is that the flashing around the chimney has deteriorated and is allowing water to penetrate into your house. There are other situations as well, but before spending big bucks to rebuild the chimney I would look into the flashing situation.

973-537-0001 is Elite's number. They also have a website http://www.elitechimney.com.

Thanks LilLB - I'll put that in my address book for when I start the spring projects!
