$500 to install 1 sq. ft. tiles in my bathroom, over the existing tile. Room is 50 sq. ft. Only added issue is the area under the old vanity has to be built up to be level with the rest of the floor. I will purchase the tile, he will do everthing else.

Is this a good estimate?

This is with someone who is highly recommended on MOL.

I did a very similar job myself. (same size, too)

First -- need to remove the toilet, vanity, and thoroughly clean (degrease/de-soap) then rough up the current tile (using electric sander).

Then, lay the tile (which will take a morning)

After it has dried, grout (another morning)

Then, reinstall toilet, vanity, and plumbing.

Yep, its a good deal for $500 -

I removed the toilet and vanity. the room is empty. He's not installing anything but the tile. I'm doing everything else.

Sounds reasoanble to me. We have a 40 sq ft bathroom and are having a tiler do exactly what you described (plus level out the floor in an area where it's a bit warped)for $750. Mind giving the name of your guy?

What kind of tile are you going over? Putting tile on tile is NOT recomended as there is no real way to bond tile to tile. Be careful, this guy should at the very least be putting hardy-backer down.

Anything is doable for the short term.Even tile on tile, although I would never do that at my house. While your concept regarding Hardi Board is correct,I think the execution would prove to be difficult in regard to fastening over tile into what is probably a mortar bed and the amt.you would raise the floor concerning the doorway threshold and the flange for the toilet.

Sounds high to me. $10 a Sq. foot in a business where $4.50 is the going rate.

That price includes the build up of the area under the vanity. Still too high?

putting tile over tile is perfectly ok -- if the original tile is sound.

and no, cement board is really not needed in this situation (if it were, then the original tile should all come up first)

just be sure you use the right stuff to put it down with (not the premixed junk from HD!).

for a 2nd opinion, feel free to check with the tile experts at www.johnbridge.com

It is a small job and on a square foot basis small jobs cost more.

The tile setter is going to have to make two trips and probably spend around two hours on each trip at the job.

I don't know what a tile guy bills, but $100 and hour (including overhead/proft) seems reasonable so the $500 figure isn't totally off the wall. Just my opinion.
