We have a whole bunch of radiators in our new house--some hiss and spit and some don't and one doesn't even seem to be on. We know nothing about steam heat (in our Manhattan apt, we just flipped a switch to turn on the heat) and we are wondering if we should be bringing in some sort of expert to look at everything and balance the system (whatever that means!). I tried to follow some advice I found by searching this board, but I just don't have the vocabulary. Signed, Lost In Homeownership |

I highly recommend having Gateway plumbing come in. They taught us how to replace our air vents, checked and cleaned the system, and it works great now. Have them replace one radiator air vent, then do the rest yourself. You should have them (or someone) come out every year to maintain your boiler. Did your home inspector show you how to flush your boiler every week? (I'm not sure all boilers need this, but ours does). |

Same as Jennifer, but we use Corriago Bros. They'll give you a tutorial in steam heat without making you feel like an idiot, but will explain everything as if you WERE an idiot, if that makes sense. Vidoetape the tour so you can refer back to it. |

That's a great idea (and I'm glad other people have asked for the tutorial--makes me feel better). We had Gateway come out for something else and I had a good feeling about them, so we'll probably go back to them. Just curious--around how much should it cost to have someone come out, check and clean our system and replace air vents (valves?)? |

I may be breaking one of my own rules about posting prices and talking money on the web, but I'll direct you to our website for an idea of what a service agreement costs. www.GatewayPlumbing.com |
