Does anyone know where I could obtain a copy of my original house plans? We need to find out the location of a header (if it exists) and would prefer to do so before tearing down the entire wall. Thanks. |

Hmmm. For something like that, I'd take a more cautious approach. Cut the plaster, do a visual inspection, that sort of thing. My wife was very anxious to get floor plans for our house, but could never find them. I actually bought Punch home design software and have been 'mapping' the house. Good luck! |

I have heard rumors that plans are kept by the county down in Newark where deeds and deed transfers are kept by the County Clerk. I have never tried to check this out. |

The office that might have these records is the Essex County Register. http://www.essexregister.com They're located in the Hall of Records which is next to the county courthouse, just west of MLK Blvd. |

I got plans for my house at Town Hall, but I think that was because there had been an addition put on in the 20's, so it was on file because of the need for a permit. |

Thanks for all of the suggestions. My home had an addition put on it in the early 70's, so maybe Town Hall will have something on file. |

If your house was a kit house - like many in the area, the builders sometimes rolled up the assembly instructions and left them inside the newel post.

the Hall of records is a gorgeous old building and the staff that assisted me was very courteous and helpful to get a certified copy of the deed to my parents house (not in MPL) I also went there several years ago and looked up in the tax records all the way back to when my MPL house was built in 1926. I would love to get the plans to my house too. |

Maplewood Town Hall has plans to many of the houses in town, upstairs in engineering, I think. They can be borrowed for a deposit (it was $100 when I did it a few years ago) and you can get them copied at a blueprint specialist (ask them at Town Hall for a recommendation). |
