I have a garbage disposal that is working but the water isn't going anywhere. Do I need to call a plumber or can I do it myself? Also, can I run my dishwasher? thanks... |

My guess is that you need to call a plumber. It sounds like the blockage is past the garbage disposal. Also, if you dishwasher is installed in the standard way, you won't be able to use that either. This is because the dishwasher drains into the sink above the garbage disposal. You could try Drano. Whether or not that will work depends on the location of the blockage. |

I had this problem a month ago and had to call Ronnie from Maplewood Drain (he advertises on MOL so you should be able to find the number here). He had to snake the drain twice and found paper towels and brillo pads in the pipe. The cleaning crew had been disposing of their used supplies down the garbage disposal. I had to have a discussion with them after that. Ronnie charged me something around $90 - well worth it. |

I don't think you should use Drano with a disposal... If the disposal is full of Drano -- it will make cleaning the clog much harder for the plumber -- and when (not if) the Drano then splatters around your kitchen -- it will damage surfaces. I recently used Ronnie (Maplewood Sewer --an advertiser on MOL) -- he got to the house very quickly, cleared the clog, was very reasonably priced. /p |

My plumber recommended a product called Pequa for my clogged bathroom sink. It worked like a charm. |

You need it snaked. The old house main drains get caked with stuff over the years and need to be snaked about 1xyear when you use a garbage disposal. Tip: Never, never, never put rice (cooked, or especially uncooked!) down a garbage disposal! Some will get caught and swell and cause a clog. You probably already know about not putting celery, or any other stringy things in it b/c it will jam. |

Thanks, all. I called Ronnie, he came and he snaked. We're running smoothly now. Thanks for all the suggestions. |
