i would like to steam clean all of my area carpets. in the past i hired professional help but now i would like to do it myself. however, i'm not sure which brands and models are good and the consumer reports are not a big help.

I would like to know from people on this board their experiences with any particular carpet steam cleaners. should i get a $200-300 model; a $1000 professional machine; a rental; or leave it to the professionals?

i'm just afraid that the $200-300 equipment will break down easily and hence not worth the money spent.
