Anybody have good luck/suggestions with local Granite Counter top providers? Pricing seems to be all over the map, what do we need to be looking for?

We got ours through Jaeger in Madison, they act as a middleman between you, the stoneyard (IMG) and the fabricator (AMJ). The advantage is that they have granite samples at Jaeger so you can see exactly how a type of granite will look in your home. Also Jaeger has more convenient hours for me, and personal service. I'm not sure if I paid more for this priviledge if it is made up by a volume discount or something. I think All Granite and Marble is a little quicker from template to install, though, we have been without a countertop for a week and still haven't heard when the new one will be coming in. Hopefully it comes in soon so I can rate the whole experience!

All Granite and Marble was great- we had our countertops in less than one week from the time we called and ordered to the time of installation. Prices are very reasonable and they have a huge selection.

They are in Ridgefield Park, NJ
http://www.allgraniteandmarble.com/contact_us.php

They also have all their slabs out in their yard so if you want, you can go and take a look at the exact slab you're getting- it's pretty cool to see them in such large pieces, it gives you a much better idea of the whole look than you will get from looking at a small square sample.

Yes, I should say we also looked at the whole slab as well. But the granite we chose looks very different in the house, which surprised me. We went with Sapphire Blue, which is quite blue in natural light (we didn't want blue), but neutral in the mostly artificial light of our kitchen.

I would look into Atlas Marble & Granite -- they are located in Newark. They have a ton of supply, and I think their prices are very competitive. The owner is a really nice man and knows what he is doing.

Buying granite is not as simple as it used to be.
Some suggestions:
1. Take a sample of your cabinetry, backsplash and flooring material to the yard to select a slab.
2. Get a sample of the slab to take home and view in your own light. NEVER release it to anyone in the process.
3. Get warranty and care information in writing.
4. Most importantly get a copy of the fabrication
drawing and verify the dimensions before paying your deposit or signing off.
Good Luck!!
