I know spring is still a ways off, but I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on the best local nurseries or garden centers. I'll be putting in two new flower beds and "tricking" out the new deck. I'll be looking to buy plants and containers and lots of other supplies. I know there is a lot of mixed feelings about Home Depot, and I'm sure I'll spend some time there, but I'm looking for something a little more specialized... Thanks in advance! Jen |

Williams in Westfield is great. It's on Meisel just over the overpass that goes over Rt 22. Not cheap, but excellent. Dubrow's in Livingston also has a great reputation, but starting this spring they are discontinuing their nursery operations and becoming just a landscape design firm. |

The Farm in Green Village. It is just past Chatham Township. You go to Shunpike the make a left on Green Village Road and go about 2 miles. It is fabulous and well worth the maybe 20 min to 30 min trip. |

Do you know about the Maplewood Garden Club sale, held Mother's Day weekend at the pool parking lot? It actually begins Thursday, and if you want to be serious about it, that's the day to go. I also like J&M on Main Street in Madison. They don't have quite as much stuff as Williams, but their plants always are in excellent shape, and they do have lots of great containers and other hardscaping materials. I've been to Home Depot on days when it looked as if the plants hadn't been watered all week -- and the lines there usually are very long. |

Orange Landscape Supply, or something like that, in Orange supplies a lot of local landscapers. There's this huge lot in the middle of a sub-urban area. You walk in, there are NO sales people, you can wander about and look at giant specimens of trees. The prices are lower. Everone there knows each other by first name, "Hold on Joe." Looking at me, "Yeah, whaddah want?" "I'm doing my own landscaping.?" Long pause. "Miguel!" I paid them to deliver some trees, not insured. So far, so good. If you want to put on some Carhart's and pretend to be a legit landscaper, it's the place. You can save/risk some money. J.B. This is more for landscaping, less for nursery. Good luck! |
