Attic fans or whole house fans. They are not one and the same. What are you trying to do? |

Case, I'm not cranky, just would like to answer a question with a correct answer, and I need information. If you see that as cranky, well then someone is.

We installed an attic fan (on a thermostat) in the roof to draw hot air out of the attic space. We also installed a whole house fan in the ceiling of the second floor that pulled air through the house and into the attic, where it is forced out through the attic vents and open windows (in summer.) You cannot pull more air through the house than the attic can release. If you have small openings at the ridge of your roof, that will not be sufficient for the volume of air that the whole house fan draws. .....and dammit, I am cranky this morning

Sorry JG, I saw that post after the 'plumbing' post where you were blasting Mark. Its OK - everyone is entitled to be cranky once in awhile. Don't worry about it. ;) I like US2's response - accurate and helpful, without needing a clarification from the original poster. Amazing! At any rate, I did a lot of research on these last year, and retained this URL: http://www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/infattfan/infattfan2a.shtm Its got a photo of a very large fan. I wound up putting in several ventilator fans, which DO tend to draw the air through the house (its a small house). Honestly, I just couldn't afford the space to put up a 'real' whole house fan. Before I turn it on, I need to make sure that the attic door is open... or that attic windows are; otherwise it would be too much stress on the fans. Note that this fan draws air out of the house; the other kind of fan US2 mentions actually draws air into the attic... where it has to be vented using a continuous-ridge vent or more traditional vents (the name of which escapes me, dammit).

I love whole house fans. That said, they need very specific installation. The best is a gable vent with supply from the house. This will double as an attic fan for a part of the season. If you want to talk more about it, shoot me a Private Line and I will pop over. Later, George Berkeley |

Jason, I have an enormous uninstalled fan sitting in my attic that we have no intention of using (we have central air now). We've been in the house for 12 years and I don't think the thing has moved a foot since. Whoever buys our house is getting it. Let me know if you are interested. I just want it out. |

Jason- I grew up in a Maplewood house that had an attic fan that drew the air through the house and out...we kept a window cracked opened in whatever rooms we were in and got a cook breeze at night. That being said, when I married and moved into our own home, the previous owners had a regular window fan in an attic window with boards rigged on the sides and for about ten years we used that in the heat of the summer...then we had the attic finished and our contractor found a bigger attic fan and refurbished it and attached it to an attic window that we can remove in the summer and he put a timer on the second floor so that we can open the attic door and turn the fan on and it is wonderful. Can cool the whole house down and at night, again, provides that wonderful breeze that I love with a window cracked open in our room. The fan is actually preferable to A/C except on the hottest days/evenings. It is my experience that you do not need to make a huge investment to be cool. There is an attic fan for sale in the MOL classifieds. Good luck with your decision.

I need to have one of those attic fans installed, as my attic get really overheated when it's hot. I was also told that installing soffit vents would help. Can someone please tell me if there is one person I could call who could do these jobs for me? Thanks! |
