Without getting into a huge debate about siding: original vs vinyl vs hardiboard, etc, I’m wondering if anyone here has had their vinyl siding removed and original wood restored/painted, what their experience was, and around how much they spent? Our house (1920s Dutch Colonial) has vinyl siding from the 80s that’s still holding up but we’d love to go back to the original wood. If that’s financially impossible, we will likely re-vinyl. If we vinyl’d, we found a contractor/company who would remove the current vinyl and put on insulation and new vinyl for around 11k. If we attempt to go back to the original clapboard, is there a company that will remove the vinyl AND restore/paint the wood? Or would we need to hire two (or more!) separate companies? If we removed a few boards of the vinyl to see what’s underneath, can we just tack them back up or will we have to replace those vinyl boards? If we receive a quote from a contactor/company to remove the vinyl and restore wood, can they add on additional fees (and potentially how much?) if they find huge problems underneath (sawed off window parts/trim, for example)? The house also had an addition put on in the 80s, maybe at the same time they put the vinyl up so it may not have wood siding underneath. Not sure how much of a nightmare we’d be entering if we took this on and would love to get some contractor/company recommendations and pricing, and hear cautionary and/or inspiring stories before we invest a lot of time and hope… anyone have any thoughts? have already searched archives but am hoping for more info. |

I don't have the number on hand, but Tico's carpentry replaced a ton of my cedar shakes and they did a great job - fast, professional, and their estimate was right in the middle between too-good-to-be-true and omigod-the-shakes-must-be-14K-gold price. Call Tico's and ask them to make an estimate - if they don't do the tear-off w/ the siding, they can steer you to a company that does.

Removal of vinyle or aluminum siding is easy. But can you imagine how many nail holes you will have to fill? Not counting replacing the original siding where it is rotted. Also there probably was a lot of trim removed, and usually they would have cut back the window sills. If the original siding was wood shingles, you can bet that a lot of will come off when you remove the siding and they you would have to replace it. If you want to get rid of the vinyl and go back to wood I would think you would almost have to replace all the old siding. There is a lot of new siding on the market, you almost can't tell from a distance if it's wood or vinyl. home depot doesn't carry it. the closest place would probably be Premier aluminum on Freeman st. Orange, just off scotland road. need more info let me know. Least expensive way would be to remove the vinyl and install new vinyl |

When you remove siding it is a crap shoot as to what you will find underneath so it is impossible to know how much the job is going to cost. You many get lucky and just need a scraping and paint, or you may find that all the siding has to be replaced and a lot of trim work recreated.
