I paid an electrician to put in a new electrical box, and now everytime I use the microwave the I blow a fuse. This did not happen with my old, not up to code box.

Also I keep calling him and he won't call me back. So there's that too

This does not sound right. Have you tried the microwave in other outlets? How old is the microwave?

Probably there are to many appliances on one circuit. This might have been changed during the installation of the new box.

Do you have a final inspection sticker on the box?

He wired it into an existing circuit that is now overloaded. Are you blowing fuses or throwing a breaker? If it's the breaker you may be able to swap it out for one with a higher amp load, but that depands on the load you're putting on the circuit and more importantly the gauge of the wires.

Hmmm. I'd say at this point that you don't want to be swapping circuit breakers on your own. Its not difficult, but as Ace points out - the gauge of the wires is pretty important!

If it were me, I'd call the electrician one more time and leave a message to the effect that you're calling the township because you're afraid that the electrical work isn't up to code and you may have a safety issue.

Its not so nice, but then again... not returning phone calls is pretty nasty too.

The same thing happened to us when we upgraded our service. The problem for us wasn't that the new one was installed improperly, but that the old one was. We had to many appliances and it should have been tripping the old circuit but it wasn't *Scary*. Do you have a before and after view of what circuit controlled your outlets? This will give you a clue if they combined circuits.

it's a new microwave.
I have had the town inspector out.
I am throwing a breaker.

I have three calls into the guy and no call back.
I got his name off of one of the conversations about electricians here on the board. Don't want to print his name, as I don't want to trash him.

BUT

I called him about the box smelling like smoke and sizzling. He came out said it was something to do w/ the central air.

I called airgroup.
They said electrician put in a bad breaker. this cost me $200 to have airgroup come and tell me it was the electrician's fault. They waited for him to show up to show him what was wrong.

OK. Electrician fixes that.
Then tell him about the microwave thing. Which yes, I also have the fridge on. So he says pull fridge plug when using the microwave. OK. I'll do that. It still blows when fridge in unplugged.

My thing is: why did I have to pay to have a new box only to have the thing trip everytime I use the microwave.

Granted. Old box was OLD. But still why is a new box causing me problems I didn't have w/ new one.

And why is he not calling me back.
maybe I will call someone new.

Or, is this problem different than the box - maybe he thinks I keep calling him out under the "I also need this done under the price I paid you for the box job"......

I'll never know, as I can't get in touch w/ him and I am starting not to want to work w/ him.

We were instructed that major appliances (refrig) should always be on their own circuit.

In fact, I thought that it is code that the fridge is on its own circuit. When we put a freezer in the basement, we had to put in a breaker just for that.

It also doesn't sound right that a microwave should trigger the circuit breaker. Have you tried the microwave on another circuit? Perhaps it is defective.

That said, it sounds like your refigerator shouldn't be on the same circuit and you have good reason to question the quality of your electrician's work.

Did you have them redo the wiring or just update the service? When you just have them update the service they will not rewire all of the circuits. If a circuit is not to code before the service update it won't be afterwards. I agree with KRNL about testing the microwave on another circuit, it seems odd that the microwave will trip the circuit but the refrigerator does not.

The real problem is that they are not calling you back. How are you suppose to deal with this when it happens?

I've used one electrician consistently since we moved to Maplewood in 1997, and he's proven to be reliable and trustworthy. I haven't needed his services for the past couple of years, though. I suppose that's a good sign.

Let me know if you want his name and number.
