Replacing shower fixtures

It is a single handle and I just replaced the "balancing cartridge" to stop a leak that we've endured for the last two years. We want to replace the fixtures, but with the huge selection on the market, how do I know that a new fixture will be compatible with the valve that is currently installed. I don't want to have to change the valve if I don't have to.
