We bought a house and inherited a shower with a "godawful" Price Pfister shower fixture. It is a single handle and I just replaced the "balancing cartridge" to stop a leak that we've endured for the last two years. We want to replace the fixtures, but with the huge selection on the market, how do I know that a new fixture will be compatible with the valve that is currently installed. I don't want to have to change the valve if I don't have to. Is there cross compatibility among manufacturers?

Addition to my previous post:
If you need to repace the valve in the wall to install another company's fixture, is this a job that I could reasonably undertake on my own? I'm reasonably handy, but as this is our only shower, I'd rather not start something I can't finish.
