I am interested in having built-in bookshelves placed in my living room. Can anyone recommend a good carpenter? Thanks.

Here are the bookcases that we had built-in, so-to-speak. Not around a fireplce but on both sides of an archway between LR and DR. WE love them because they look like they've always been there. Builder was Victor Garbowski - 917-403-8510

The shelves look great, Mr. T. How much did he charge and how long did it take?

JazCCI, we shopped around and had 3 or 4 carpenters and cabinet makers bid on the work (we had a vague drawing of what we wanted). We got price quotes from $5-8K. We found that very discoraging.

But, the builder that we've used for our basement, deck, etc. (about whom I've posted many times here) said he could do it for under $two. The problem was WHEN he could do it - he is very busy and said it may be a while. We waited a few months and he finally did it.

He took lots of measurements and took the drawing and basically built and painted the whole thing in his shop, dismantled it and installed them here. Installation took just a few hours including another coat of paint.

The beauty of it is it doesn't look like a new additon, it looks like its always been there. And we got to put all our knick-knacks, tchotchkes and doodads on there. (Man, you NEED a place for your knick-knacks, tchotchkes and doodads.)

Victor has done lots of work for us and we've referred him to lots of people so you may not get as great a price as we did...but...he didn't give us any of the bullsh*t that the cabinet makers did about special woods and spray painting high-end enamel, etc.

Please tell him Howard referred you.

I meant doors on the built-ins, to hide the clutter! I want to do something similar in my dining room, putting solid shaker style doors on the bottom and glass front on the top, with an open space in the center to use as a hutch/serving space.

I think I will end up doing what I did with my desk, getting a few pieces of unfinished furniture to build the two units and have them finish them...the price I got was about $2k and I don't want to spend more than that! (Doors add to the expense.)

Oh, I'm sure he could make and install beautiful doors on the bookcases, as you described. You got nothing to lose by calling him to come over and look and for an estimate.

You're right. My space is a bit smaller than yours, so perhaps the pricing would be ok. Thanks for the info!
