Now, why does this topic make me nervous? I think it depends a lot on the kind of attic you have. From what I can tell, there are two kinds of whole-house fans: the ones that mount on your attic/crawl space floor, and the ones that mount on an external attic surface (usually the wall). If you use the former, you'll have to make sure that you have adequate venting in the attic to handle the fan (this makes sense - you're basically drawing a large volume of air into the attic... where is it going to go?). If you use the latter type, you'll need to insure that you have a way to supply the fan (usually by opening the attic door, which is what I do). I didn't have room for a really large whole-house fan, so I elected to put two ventilator fans on the roof. With the attic door open, I'm able to draw cool air through the house in the mornings (and also ventilate the hell out of the attic). Here's a starter website: http://www.atticfans.com/ |
