My husband and I currently have a faux fireplace (no chimney) and are considering having a real one put in. does anyone know who might do this and what it might cost?

We put a gas fireplace in our kitchen. We tracked down the wholesaler ourselves, so they installed it. We had to have a carpenter/contractor do the framing and a plumber run the lines. We also did the mantle, etc.

Keep in mind that there are code issues, so you want to be aware of those before you get started. Also, be prepared to show the inspector the manufacturer's specs in the installation books. It will help if there is a question about how something is installed.

Our neighbors put a wood-burning fireplace in their home and I understand that they went thru hell with the code issues.

Jack Williams & Sons. 973-284-0867

We also had a faux fireplace (it did have a gas line in it, but no flue, so we probably would have died if we used it...)

We had Jack rebuild the firebox and expand our chimney with an additional flue (it only had one flue for the furnace). We then had a carpenter rebuild our mantle (for a 'decorative' fireplace, the thing we had was REALLY ugly). Although we had a gas log unit put in (that was done by the installer provided by the place we bought the log unit at), he would also do a wood-burning fireplace if that's what you are looking for - no problem.

I don't remember off-hand, but I think the job cost something like $12,000 (that doesn't include getting the gas log unit or the carpentry). I can take a look later for the actual, but that number sticks in my mind.

A zero clearance gas direct vent fireplace has a lot to offer, while upsetting the purests no end. It would be cheaper to install and, if you are anything like me and a little lazy, you will probably use it more since it starts with the flick of a switch.

The Fireplace Place in Summit on Springfield Avenue carries a number of brands and in some the flame is very realistic. I would, however, shop around for price.

Thanks so much. $12,000 seems more expensive than I had thought it might cost. Greenetree, who did you have put in your gas fireplace? and/or do you know who your neighbor's used and what theirs cost?

G&D - We used Mazda out of Whippany for purchase and installation. Our plumber ran the gas lines as part of the kitchen reonvation and our ex fake-contractor built the framing (twice because the first time the measurements were off several inches). I also remember that our electrician did a dedicated circuit & installed the on/off switch (also part of his overall work).

Any competent (or incompetent in my case) contractor can build the framing, insulate it, etc. The installation specs are very detailed. Most plumbers have done work with gas fireplace lines and my electrician hadn't done it before but just had to read the specs.

Thinking about it, if we'd had one contractor come in and do everything (from purchase to complete installation, with finish and mantle) as a one-off project, I'll bet it would have been $8-$10k. They can mark the fireplace unit up pretty nicely.

I don't know who my neighbors used, but I'm not sure that they would recommend their contractor. They started their kitchen/family room project last summer & are just now starting to put appliances in.

Greentree, we are thinking about putting in a gas fireplace in our family room. Does Mazda have a show room or are they just wholesale/mailorder?

And here I was thinking Mazda just made cars. :-)

They are a wholesaler, but he gave us a break for ingenuity & tenacity.

They don't really have a showroom; it's a warehouse/distribution center. There are a few units hanging around, but you can't always see one working and you can't necessarily see the one you want.

I'd done lots of internet research on brands, pros/cons, etc. and was happy to see that the distributor for the one we wanted was near enough to go visit. I'm trying to remember the brand.....
