Are there any flowers you can put in the ground yet that will survive some cold nights? When is it safe to plant? I know...I'm getting ahead of myself. Thanks all.

When I'm itching for some early spring color, I usually get pansies and put them in pots. They are cold tolerant. Just cover them if we get a hard freeze (or bring them in). |

Cubeless - I started planting this week - some seeds have to go in as soon as the soil can be worked. I've planted snow peas, poppies and spinach so far. Snow peas are fun and they're so tasty if you grow them yourself. If you have kids who like to garden, snow peas are pretty much guaranteed to grow and very satisfying - their blossoms are a delicate purple, and kids can pick them and eat them right off the vine. Whole Foods has some interesting seed varieties - that's where I picked up the seeds. |

I agree. Pansies are your best bet for brightening up chilly Spring days. I actually potted some up last weekend (a bit early but I couldn't help myself). They're really tough. In the Fall, make sure you plant lots of bulbs like early-flowering daffodils (I plant several types that bloom at different times), snowdrops etc, so you've got some flowers to look forward to. |
