Ours seems a bit small compared to others we've seen. Right now it's just brick--is it possible to carve out more of the brick to create a larger opening?

Michael, why wouldn't you recommend it? Bad for the chimney or dangerous in some way? Too expensive?

Your fireplace is likely to be an original coal fireplace. They are shallow. Does this sound like yours? Not advisible to carve out anything from your fireplace. It will collapse.
