My husband and I close on a new house in two weeks, and we want to do a minor bathroom update. The shower, tub, and tile are all good enough, but we want to replace the sink, medicine cabinet, toilet and lights. Maybe even add a fan. I have done some searches of the site for bathroom tips, but most people seem to be doing bigger projects. Can anyone recommend a good person for this smaller project?

I am guessing it would be the type of thing that we will go and pick out the pieces and we would just need them installed.

Thanks for any pointers!

Rose1 -

Sounds like you're doing what we did!

I bought all the stuff (sink, tiolet, light fixture, wainscoting) and he installed it all for me and painted.

Here's his info: Marc Persaud
cell: 973-698-1447, office 973-313-2655

I re-vamped the whole bathroom for around $2,000 total.

I bought the sink, matching tiolet and fixtures at that plumbing supply place on Scotland Rd. right before the hill into West Orange. Forgot the name, anyone?

If you ask for a discount, they'll give you one, which was a nice surprise.

Good luck!

Also check out Central Kitchen & Bath on Central Ave in Orange. They are an authorized Toto dealer. (and I think the concensus on MOL is that Toto is the only toilet worth a darn. After much research, we are installing a "Drake" with a round seat (easier for little kids than an oval) with a soft close seat. We're also replacing our vanity and using Central to make that as well as a fairly cheap granite top/sink to fit.

Jeanine at Central is great and gives a good discount w/out being asked (and she'll meet or beat other prices quotes too - she did for my granite top anyway, but I dont' think its a guaranteed lowest price or anything.) Oh, and Orange has only a 3% sales tax, if that means anything to you.

And, since our ugly pink tub was in very good shape, we just had it "refinished" in "bisquit" which is the same off-white color that our toilet and sink bowl will be in.

I'm getting quotes from area plumbers for the installation of the fixtures - so far it looks like it'll be about $500 to remove & take away the old/install the new.

Good luck!

Rose1, part of the reason so many MOLer's seem to be doing complete bathroom redo's is necessity. Many of our old houses still have the original plumbing and are just plain tired and worn out. Have a plumber check out the age/condition of your pipes, drains before you do the minor update--it could save you from having to do a complete redo within a short time.

ps: That so many homes have old, tired plumbing is really a testament to how well constructed they were to begin with.

Thanks for the help! I did give Marc a call, and got an estimate from him. Lydia, when you said the total was around $2000, do you mind me asking how much of that was labor? Because Pdg's mention of $500 sounds a whole lot better than what I am looking at right now. Pdg, did you find someone you are going with? Would you share the number?

Thanks so much, and good luck on your projects!

I'll send you a PL. Keep in mind, my guy was a plumber-only and is not doing anything with lights or a fan installation.

Hi,
I read the posts and found them interesting. Could anyone recomend a contractor to do the "re-glazing" of a tub. Thanks.

Mitch, I just had our pink tub reglazed in late Feb. I found this guy from MOL references (the old thread should be easy to find - something like "anyone reglaze a tub?") and didn't bother to quote the job out. The poster who referred me said his tub was $350 to do recently. I was quoted $375 and figured "whats $25 more - why quibble?" Then, after he got here he pointed out some tiny digs/gouges (after he'd already been working, I assume preparing the surface, btw) that I'd never noticed before. Hmmmm.

Anyway, he said for $45 more he could repair any tiny chips. He also said that the tiny amount of rusting near the drain cover would not be guaranteed. I said ok to the chip repair, and no to him replacing my drain cover with a fancy flip plug thingy, which I think he said would be $50.

All that said, I paid $420 and he threw in an approved bathmat b/c he only had one left and it was dirty from his truck (I don't' remember what he wanted to charge for it.)

You can't use the suction-cup rubbermaid mats any more. He could put down a slip-resistant bottom (don't remember if it was extra, but it wouldn't surprise me!), but I said no since my kids are old enough to realize how to behave in a slippery tub and I think non-slip bottoms get grungy looking faster.

You have to be careful about dropping things, like a hand-held shower-head, since the paint will chip and that is not guaranteed.

Likewise, you can't really scrub the tub and have to use a sponge and a spray cleaner like Lysol tub & tile (which I used anyway, so no biggie there.)

The tub looks a lot better b/c it is now ivory instead of pink, but the shine looks better than it feels. It does feel a bit like satin paint, and there are a couple of tiny bumps/peaks - I guess a perfectly smooth finish outside a shop isn't to be expected.

Overall, the kids still love their baths and I think the bathroom looks a lot better for way less than it would have cost to yank out the old, fully tiles around tub and install a new tub (the kids loved the hot air jets tub which was $1,500 for the floor model!)

I do expect the look to deteriorate during the 5 yr guarantee and that we'll need to do it again. We'll probably use the same company again.

I used Premier Refinishing in Verona and the guy, Sal, was very nice, cleaned up well and I'd say overall did a good job. I didn't appreciate being nickeled and dimed at the time of the job, but I'm sure he was just doing his job. 973-571-0077
