For some reason, my house has no door to the back yard. What it does have is a large picture window in the dining room that overlooks the back yard.

We're looking to replace that window with a French or sliding door. The window's about 3 feet off the floor, so I imagine we'd have to cut out a larger opening to fit the new door. Since the house is on a slight hill, the room is about 7 feet off ground level, so we'd need a staircase (or a deck with a staircase) to take you the rest of the way down to the yard.

Is this a simple thing to have done? Can anyone recommend a good contractor who can do it? Any ideas what it might cost?

Thanks!

I did exactly that with the same problems of the height of the floor to the back yard.

I built a two layer deck.

Want to see it, get some ideas,

Call me at 973 953-0781.

Later,
George

We just changed a window and a door (had the door opening directly onto the stove - not the best of ideas with little kids!). We already had a deck though. The problems we ran into (which increased the $$) was no appropriate header over the window and the incredibly tedious work of reinstalling the aluminum siding so it didn't look like a half-a**ed job. Dave Anstatt did the work and did an awesome job.

We replaced an old, leaky double wide window with French Doors. We choose a wide staircase with a wide top "stair" instead of a deck and are really pleased with the result.

We considered a 2 level deck without those side railings that remind me of a playpen, but went with the staircase since ordinances prohibit decks without side railings. Also, you will get hit with more taxes if you add a deck.
